Siemens is a German technology conglomerate founded in Berlin in 1847 by Werner von Siemens around a telegraph that indicated letters rather than Morse code. After a decade of divestments it now concentrates on industry, infrastructure, transport and healthcare, supplying factory automation and control systems, building and grid technology, trains and signalling, and the Teamcenter and NX design software acquired through a long run of software purchases. The Siemens Xcelerator platform ties hardware to software and digital twins, and the group retains a majority stake in the separately listed medical imaging company Siemens Healthineers.

Applications Engineer - Power Systems & Protection

Location: Hebburn, UK

This role is primarily based from our Hebburn office, where collaboration with the wider engineering team forms an important part of the role. We offer flexibility when required, alongside occasional travel to customer sites across the UK and Ireland.

Are you passionate about electrical power systems and looking for a role where no two projects are the same?

Our Applications Engineering team is at the forefront of power system protection, helping customers solve complex technical challenges, develop innovative solutions and adopt emerging technologies. Combining technical expertise with customer engagement, you'll work on everything from protection relay applications and system testing to solution development and customer support, alongside a highly experienced team of power system specialists.

We welcome applications from candidates at all stages of their career and are open to appointing at Applications Engineer, Senior Applications Engineer or Principal Applications Engineer level depending on experience and capability.

What You'll Do

Working at the forefront of power system protection, you'll support a diverse range of projects involving SIPROTEC and Reyrolle protection relays, IEC 61850 digital substations, protection and control systems, and transmission and distribution networks. You'll work closely with customers and colleagues to develop solutions, provide technical expertise and help deliver reliable, resilient power infrastructure.

  • Design, configure, test and commission protection and control solutions for critical power infrastructure.
  • Develop protection schemes and support FAT, SAT and secondary injection testing activities.
  • Provide technical support, troubleshooting, training and guidance to customers throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Work directly with customers to understand technical challenges and develop effective engineering solutions.
  • Collaborate with sales, tendering and project teams, contributing technical expertise to bids, proposals and customer presentations.
  • Support the development and application of new technologies and innovative protection solutions.
  • Build strong relationships with customers and colleagues while continuing to develop your technical knowledge within a supportive and highly experienced engineering team.
  • Ensure Compliance by handling type registrations and ENA assessments for both transmission and distribution operators

What We're Looking For

  • Degree qualification in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant industry experience.
  • Understanding of electrical power systems and protection principles, with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality engineering solutions.
  • A proactive approach with a willingness to learn and develop new skills and technologies.

Desirable

  • Experience working within power systems, protection and control, substations, utilities or energy infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of protection relays such as SIPROTEC, Reyrolle, SEL, ABB Relion, GE Multilin or equivalent products.
  • Experience of protection relay configuration, commissioning or testing.
  • Understanding of transmission and distribution network operations.
  • Experience of IEC 61850 and associated communications protocols.
  • Familiarity with IEC 60870-5-103, Modbus, DNP3, Profibus or similar communication technologies.
  • Secondary injection testing experience using OMICRON or equivalent equipment.
  • Knowledge of substation design and control systems.
  • Experience supporting customers in a technical, applications or pre-sales engineering environment.
  • Programming or scripting experience would be advantageous.

If you don't meet every requirement but believe your skills and experience are relevant, we'd still encourage you to apply.

Why Join Siemens?

This is an opportunity to join a highly experienced and collaborative team of power systems and protection specialists who enjoy solving complex engineering challenges and sharing knowledge. No two projects are the same, and you'll have the chance to work across a wide variety of technologies, customers and applications within critical energy infrastructure. As the team often supports emerging technologies and new developments, you'll be exposed to innovative work rather than purely business-as-usual activities, giving you the opportunity to continuously learn and broaden your expertise. Whether you're early in your career or an experienced engineer, you'll be surrounded by knowledgeable colleagues who are passionate about developing talent, supporting each other and delivering technical excellence for customers across the UK and Ireland.
