About the Role
Join our team behind ReadID, the market leader in mobile identity verification. As a Senior Java Cloud & DevOps Engineer, you will design, scale, and secure our high-throughput SaaS platform. You will bridge backend software engineering and modern cloud operations, driving progressive continuous delivery across public and sovereign clouds on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and/or AWS with Kubernetes.
About the team
You will be joining a multi disciplinary agile team with an informal, open and positive atmosphere with a culture of mutual help and support. The team is located in the heart of Enschede in a modern workplace offering a comfortable working setup. There is a friendly, social vibe, with activities during and outside of work. A significant part of the team usually works from the office which helps integration and getting up to speed.
What you will do
Backend Engineering: Develop and maintain the high-performance ReadID SaaS backend with a security-first, high-availability mindset.
Cloud & Container Orchestration: Manage, optimize, and deploy containerized workloads across multi-region Kubernetes (GKE) environments on GCP and other cloud infrastructures.
CI/CD & Progressive Delivery: Architect robust CI/CD pipelines supporting zero-downtime releases, canary/progressive deployments, and automated rapid rollbacks.
Clean Code & Quality Engineering: Write clean, modular, and thoroughly tested code (Unit, Integration, E2E) with backward-compatible APIs and technical documentation.
Quality Assurance: Participate in release testing and validation to ensure seamless interoperability across diverse mobile devices and international identity documents.
DevOps & CloudOps Leadership: Proactively drive infrastructure-as-code, backend optimization, observability, and automated operational workflows.
Agile Collaboration: Collaborate with cross-functional, global engineering teams and enterprise customers in an agile setup.
What we expect
Education: BSc or MSc degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Cybersecurity, or a related field.
Strong Java skills: 7+ years of proven professional experience in server-side Java engineering (Java 17+, Jakarta EE / Java EE, Spring / Spring Boot).
Cloud & DevOps Expertise: Hands-on experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) (or AWS with a strong desire to focus on GCP), Kubernetes (GKE), Docker, and modern CI/CD automation tools.
API & Data Standards: In-depth knowledge of RESTful API architecture, JSON, XML, and relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, or Oracle).
Security Mindset: Strong grasp of application security principles, identity/cryptography standards, and OWASP guidelines.
Problem-Solving & Leadership: Ability to take ownership of complex architectural challenges from design and prototyping to production rollout.
Communication: Full professional proficiency in English (both verbal and written).
Site Reliability & Support: Take part in periodic 24/7 on-call shifts to support incident management and platform reliability.
Location: Located within commuting distance of Enschede (or willing to relocate), comfortable working from the office at least 2 days a week (most colleagues prefer ~4 days).
Nice to Have
Experience with Observability & Logging platforms (e.g., ELK Stack, Prometheus, Grafana, Cloud Monitoring).
Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) and GitOps tooling (e.g., ArgoCD).
Basic knowledge of frontend web technologies (JavaScript, TypeScript, Angular).
Relevant certifications: Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect / DevOps Engineer or CKA (Certified Kubernetes Administrator).
