Engineering Manager

The Forms team builds one of the most widely used features in the Smartsheet ecosystem - the experiences that let our customers easily manage and collect intake from their own customers and internal teams. We're a vibrant team with engineers at every level - from early-career to senior - and we're responsible for making it simple and reliable for anyone to gather structured information at scale. We're deepening our investment in operational excellence and exploring how AI can make intake smarter, and we're looking for an Engineering Manager to help lead the team through this next chapter.

You will lead and grow a team of engineers spanning all experience levels, coaching them to deliver high-quality, highly available backend systems on time and with lasting technical health. You'll bring strong technical judgment in backend development, architecture, and design to guide the team's decisions, own the roadmap creation and execution for the Forms team, partner closely with Product and cross-functional stakeholders, and help raise the bar on operational excellence for a feature that's critical to the Smartsheet experience.

You Will:

• Lead, coach, and grow a team of engineers across all experience levels, building a culture of technical excellence, ownership, and continuous improvement
• Own roadmap creation and prioritization for the Forms team in partnership with Product and Design, translating customer and business needs into a clear, sequenced plan
• Drive successful, predictable delivery of projects - from scoping through launch - balancing quality, speed, and technical debt
• Provide hands-on technical guidance on backend architecture and design, helping the team make sound long-term decisions for a high-scale, highly used system
• Champion operational excellence, raising the bar on system reliability, availability, and performance, and leading the team's response to incidents and post-incident learning
• Build and evolve team structure, process, and ways of working (e.g., planning cadence, on-call, sprint/Scrumban process) to match team growth and delivery needs
• Partner with engineering and product leadership to explore and shape opportunities to bring AI-powered capabilities to the forms and intake experience
• Interview, hire, and onboard engineers to build a high-performing, diverse team
• Coach, mentor, and develop direct reports, providing career growth planning, regular feedback, and performance management
• Create an inclusive team culture that recognizes individual strengths and supports engagement and development for engineers at every level
• Partner cross-functionally with Product, Design, and other engineering teams to ensure Forms work is well-integrated with the broader platform
• Communicate roadmap, delivery status, risks, and tradeoffs clearly to engineering and business leadership
• Other duties as assigned

You Have:

• Strong technical background in backend development, architecture, and system design; hands-on expertise in Java preferred
• 2-3+ years of experience managing medium-sized engineering teams, with a proven track record of coaching and mentoring engineers across experience levels, from early-career to senior
• A proven track record of successful project delivery, roadmap creation, and team/process building
• Strong experience driving operational excellence - bringing systems up to high standards of reliability, availability, and performance
• Demonstrated ability to succeed in a fast-paced, dynamic, growth-oriented environment, with the ability to adapt and shift priorities to meet evolving needs
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate technical work into business impact for stakeholders at all levels
• Bonus: experience building and leading AI-powered product features
