Smiths Group is a British engineering company founded in 1851 as a London watchmaker, and it has repeatedly reinvented itself, once supplying instruments for most British cars and aircraft before selling those businesses entirely. Today it operates in four areas: security screening equipment for airports and borders, seals and connectors for extreme industrial environments, non-destructive detection and inspection instruments, and specialist electrical connectors for aerospace and defence. Headquartered in London and listed there, it has been under investor pressure to break itself up on the argument that its divisions have little in common.

Every minute of every day, Smiths Detection’s threat detection and security screening technology helps to protect people and infrastructure, making the world a safer place.
