Smiths Group is a British engineering company founded in 1851 as a London watchmaker, and it has repeatedly reinvented itself, once supplying instruments for most British cars and aircraft before selling those businesses entirely. Today it operates in four areas: security screening equipment for airports and borders, seals and connectors for extreme industrial environments, non-destructive detection and inspection instruments, and specialist electrical connectors for aerospace and defence. Headquartered in London and listed there, it has been under investor pressure to break itself up on the argument that its divisions have little in common.

John Crane, a business of Smiths Group, is a global leader in mission-critical flow control solutions for energy and process industries that enable efficient and sustainable operations.
