[Remote] Cloud Engineer

Note: The job is a remote job and is open to candidates in USA. SoftStandard Solutions is hiring a Cloud SRE / Kafka Engineer to build, operate, and improve highly available cloud platforms and real-time streaming systems. The role combines site reliability engineering with Apache Kafka administration to support reliable, observable, and automated data pipelines and critical services.

Responsibilities

• Design, deploy, and manage Apache Kafka clusters (brokers, topics, partitions, replication, ZooKeeper/KRaft)
• Manage Kafka ecosystem components: Kafka Connect, Schema Registry, ksqlDB, MirrorMaker, and Kafka Streams
• Monitor and tune Kafka for throughput, latency, retention, and consumer lag
• Build and maintain cloud infrastructure on AWS, Azure, or GCP
• Define and track SLIs, SLOs, and error budgets to improve service reliability
• Automate infrastructure and operations using Terraform, Ansible, and scripting
• Manage containerized workloads with Docker and Kubernetes
• Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, GitLab CI, or Azure DevOps)
• Set up observability with Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, ELK, or Splunk
• Lead incident response, root cause analysis, and blameless postmortems
• Participate in on-call rotations and reduce operational toil through automation
• Implement security best practices, including encryption, ACLs, SSL/SASL, and IAM
• Plan capacity, disaster recovery, and failover strategies
• Collaborate with development, data, and platform teams

Skills

• 3-9 years
• Authorized to work in the US
• 3+ years in SRE, DevOps, or cloud infrastructure, including 3+ years of hands-on Apache Kafka administration (architecture, partitioning, replication, consumer groups)
• Experience with Kafka Connect, Schema Registry (Avro/Protobuf), Kafka security, and platforms like Confluent, Amazon MSK, or Azure Event Hubs
• Strong cloud experience on AWS (EC2, EKS, VPC, IAM, CloudWatch), Azure, or GCP, with Kubernetes and Docker in production
• Infrastructure as Code (Terraform or CloudFormation), Ansible, Git, and CI/CD pipelines
• Proficiency in Python, Go, or Bash, plus strong Linux and networking fundamentals
• Hands-on with monitoring and incident tools (Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, ELK, Splunk, PagerDuty), high availability and disaster recovery, and strong root cause analysis skills
