Help the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife fulfill its mission: To protect and enhance Oregon's fish and wildlife and their habitats for use and enjoyment by present and future generations.

We are hiring for one full-time, permanent position located in Klamath Falls, Oregon.

The goal of this recruitment is to fill the position at the Natural Resource Specialist 2 (NRS2) level. However, we encourage candidates who meet the minimum qualifications for the Natural Resource Specialist 1 (NRS1) ($4,519-$6,276/mo.) to apply, as the department may consider underfilling the position.

What you will do:

In this role, you will be tasked with advancing ODFW priorities for fish screening, fish passage and aquatic restoration efforts in the Klamath Watershed. The position is a critical liaison between project proponents, the fish screening program, fish passage program and Habitat Division. You will be responsible for outreach and providing technical assistance to irrigation districts, water users, watershed councils and conservation groups in the Klamath Basin. Additionally, you will perform data collection, analysis, and evaluation for potential fish screening and passage projects and associated habitat restoration projects, as well as project coordination.

This position will also require the successful candidate to either possess or obtain an All-Terrain Vehicle Safety Education card and a Boater Education Card within the first 6 months of hire.

What we are looking for:

Minimum Qualifications (NRS2):

To be considered for this position at the NRS2 level, applicants must meet one of the following options:

• Option 1: Six years of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program that included one year of at least two of the following: gathering data, analyzing data, or preparing reports

• Option 2: Two years of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program that included one year of at least two of the following: gathering data, analyzing data, or preparing reports, AND a Bachelor's degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science, or a closely related Bachelor’s degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework

• Option 3: One year biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program that included at least two of the following: gathering data, analyzing data, or preparing reports, AND a Master's degree Fisheries or Wildlife Science, or a closely related Master’s degree in biological/ecological sciences

• Option 4: A Doctorate degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science, or a closely related Doctorate degree in biological/ecological sciences.

Note: Applicants who have obtained a Master’s degree or Doctorate that included work experience from an internship, work/study, thesis, or similar program may list this experience in their application to receive credit for the work experience. The Master’s degree/Doctorate and applicable work experience will be considered separately, and both the education and applicable experience may count toward minimum qualifications.

Underfill Option (NRS1) Minimum Qualifications:

To be considered for this position at the NRS1 level, applicants must meet one of the following options:

• Option 1: Three years of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program.

• Option 2: A Bachelor's degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science or a closely-related Bachelor's degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework.

Desired Attributes:

• Proven experience collaborating with other agencies, Tribes, watershed councils, and non-governmental organizations to advance fish and/or wildlife habitat projects.

• Experience in at least one of the following

  • Designing or providing technical expertise, or implementing aquatic or riparian restoration projects.

  • Experience with fish screening and fish passage projects.

• Proven ability to build and maintain successful interagency, Tribal, and NGP partnerships.

• Excellent public speaking, writing, and outreach abilities.

• Ability to use persuasive diplomacy while working with landowners, partner agencies, and the public.

• Experience with fish passage and screening solutions.
