State Street is an American financial institution founded in Boston in 1792 and one of the oldest banks in the United States, though its modern business bears little resemblance to retail banking. It is one of the three dominant global custodians, holding trillions of dollars of assets in safekeeping for institutional investors and providing the fund accounting, administration and settlement infrastructure that asset managers depend on. Its investment arm State Street Global Advisors created the first American exchange traded fund with the SPDR S&P 500 Trust and remains one of the largest index managers in the world.

Job Description

The candidate will be responsible for managing daily accounting and middle-office operations supporting the alternative investments and syndicated bank loans portfolios of a large, complex Investment Manager Services client. The Assistant Vice President will oversee service delivery, provide subject-matter expertise, supervise and develop team members, and ensure accurate, timely, and well-controlled execution across the front-to-back investment lifecycle. The role requires regular interaction with the client, internal operations teams, custodian banks, administrative agents, counterparties, and technology and product partners to resolve issues, reduce operational risk, and support continuous improvement.

Individual Accountabilities

  • Manage day-to-day service delivery and production activities for Alternative Investments and Bank Loans Accounting, ensuring deadlines, quality standards, and client commitments are consistently met.
  • Lead, coach, and develop a team, including workload allocation, performance oversight, cross-training, succession planning, and growth of technical capabilities.
  • Serve as the primary escalation point for complex accounting and operational issues, providing technical expertise and ensuring timely, well-documented resolution.
  • Oversee accounting activities involving syndicated bank loans and alternative investments, including lifecycle events, cash activity, principal, interest and fee processing, accruals, valuations, position and cash reconciliations, profit and loss, and accounting feeds.
  • Review and approve standardized accounting reports, reconciliations, exception reporting, client communications, and operational documentation for accuracy and completeness.
  • Ensure cash, position, accrual, market value, and transaction breaks are investigated, assigned, resolved, and escalated in accordance with established timelines and controls.
  • Monitor corporate actions, amendments, recurring payments, settlements, funding activity, and other investment events to ensure accurate processing and accounting treatment.
  • Maintain effective controls, procedures, and evidence to support operational risk management, audit requirements, regulatory expectations, and client obligations.
  • Identify trends, recurring breaks, manual processes, and control gaps; develop and implement corrective actions that improve quality, efficiency, scalability, and resiliency.
  • Partner with the client, custodians, administrative agents, counterparties, and internal service teams to address inquiries, communicate risks, and coordinate issue resolution.
  • Support client onboarding, operating-model changes, system implementations, testing, migrations, and other strategic or regulatory initiatives.
  • Collaborate with Fund Accounting, Custody, Financial Reporting, Reconciliation, Fund Operations, Trade Processing, Middle Office, Risk, Product, Technology, and Client Service teams.
  • Prepare and present service metrics, risk indicators, aged-item analysis, issue updates, and management reporting to internal leaders and client stakeholders.
  • Exercise sound judgment on matters of significance and escalate material risks, control failures, and service concerns with clear facts, ownership, and recommended actions.
  • Develop and deliver technical training, maintain current standard operating procedures, and promote consistent application of controls and best practices across global teams.
  • Foster a collaborative, accountable, and client-focused culture that supports change adoption, continuous improvement, and prudent risk management.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business, or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Minimum seven years of relevant experience in investment accounting, fund accounting, custody, middle-office operations, trade processing, alternatives settlements or a related financial-services environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience managing or supervising an accounting or investment-operations team.
  • Strong knowledge of alternative investments and syndicated bank loans, including accounting treatment, lifecycle events, cash flows, accruals, valuations, settlements, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
  • Working knowledge of securities markets, investment products, accounting principles, operational controls, and applicable legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience supporting large institutional clients in a complex, high-volume, and deadline-driven operating environment.
  • Proven ability to investigate complex accounting and operational exceptions, determine root causes, and implement sustainable corrective actions.
  • Strong client-service, stakeholder-management, and escalation-management skills.
  • Experience with operational controls, risk management, audit support, and the development and maintenance of standard operating procedures.
  • Demonstrated success leading process improvement, automation, onboarding, migration, or implementation initiatives.
  • Strong analytical, critical-thinking, organizational, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate clearly with clients, senior management, and global partners.
  • Ability to prioritize competing demands, manage deadlines, and maintain high standards of accuracy and completeness.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint; experience with workflow, reporting, reconciliation, or investment-accounting platforms is preferred.
  • Direct client-facing experience is required.
  • Experience working across global or matrixed teams is preferred.
  • Professional accounting, finance, or project-management certification is a plus.
