Senior Software Engineer - Insight OS Team

Who are we looking for?

We’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the core backend team building Insight OS: the layer that turns findings from Surf’s data pipeline into scalable, reliable, customer-facing insights.

This is a deep technical role for an engineer with strong backend experience, comfort working with data at scale, and the ability to move fast while maintaining high standards. You’ll own critical systems end-to-end, solve complex backend and data challenges, and work closely with Product, Research, Data, and Engineering to turn ambiguous needs into pragmatic, high-impact solutions.

You care about building systems that are correct, reliable, observable, and scalable - but also about building the right things for customers.

What you'll do

• Design, build, and operate backend systems that generate customer-facing insights from Surf’s data pipeline.
• Write production-grade code that meets design specifications, anticipates edge cases, and is built for reliability and long-term maintainability.
• Own systems end-to-end, from design and implementation to deployment, observability, and production reliability.
• Solve backend and data challenges around scale, correctness, freshness, performance, and reliability.
• Translate ambiguous product, research, and technical needs into clear technical solutions.
• Raise the engineering bar through strong design, high-quality code, ownership, and clear communication.
• Collaborate closely with Product, Research, Data, and Engineering teams.

Required Skills & Experience

• 6+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Strong backend engineering background, with experience designing and operating production systems at scale.
• Strong understanding of distributed systems, microservices, APIs, data modeling, and system design.
• Experience building data-intensive systems.
• Hands-on experience with data stores such as ClickHouse, Postgres, or similar.
• Proficiency in at least one general-purpose programming language, such as Python, Go, Java, or Rust.
• Experience working in cloud-native environments.
• Strong communication skills and ability to work well across teams.
• Strong ownership, urgency, and comfort operating in ambiguity.
• Experience with data pipelines or orchestration frameworks such as Airflow, Dagster, or Prefect: An Advantage.
• Background in security, identity, risk, or enterprise SaaS: An Advantage.
