Responsibilities

• Own the backend architecture - service boundaries, data flows, and how services communicate.
• Set standards for API design, versioning, and integration between our services and external partners.
• Define backend conventions: project structure, testing, error handling, documentation, and how architecture decisions get made and recorded.
• Design for throughput, latency, and failure - and fix bottlenecks and single points of failure before they cause incidents.
• Choose the right storage for each use case, design schemas, and define which service owns which data.
• Design how LLMs fit into our backend: agent and tool-calling patterns, MCP servers over our internal systems, context handling, evaluation, and fallbacks when the model gets it wrong.
• Set the standard for AI-assisted development - how the team uses coding agents, what belongs in the repo (context files, custom commands, review workflows), and where the guardrails are.
• Keep track of architectural risks and technical debt, and turn them into a plan the teams can actually execute.
• Evaluate frameworks and third-party services, and decide what we adopt.
• Work with mobile, data, cloud, and product teams so the backend fits what they need.
• Review designs and mentor engineers.

Requirements

• 8-10+ years in backend engineering, with recent experience in an architect role.
• Deep hands-on experience with Java and Spring (Spring Boot, Spring Cloud).
• Hands-on experience delivering high-load, high-traffic systems in production environments.
• Strong understanding of microservices and distributed systems, including how they fail.
• Solid API design experience (REST, gRPC) and event-driven, asynchronous architectures.
• Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases: data modeling, indexing, query optimization.
• Practical knowledge of caching (Redis or similar) and tuning systems under load.
• Understanding of application security - authentication and authorization, secrets management, data protection.
• Working knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes - enough to design systems that run well on them.
• Experience with CI/CD, monitoring, and logging.
• Daily use of AI coding agents (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, or similar) - and a clear view of where they help and where they don't.
• Provide production support for solutions delivered by your teams, ensuring their smooth and reliable operation in the production environment.
• Good communication skills and English (Intermediate+).

Would Be a Plus

• Experience with high-scale consumer products and real-time systems.
• Experience breaking up a monolith or running a large migration.
• Experience in multi-region / geo-distributed deployment, disaster recovery.
• Experience with anti-abuse / rate limiting / DDoS protection in consumer products.
• Hands-on experience with Kafka - topic design, partitioning, consumer groups, delivery guarantees.
• JVM performance tuning and profiling.
• Hands-on experience with an agent framework (LangGraph, LangChain, or similar) - multi-step flows, state, retries, human-in-the-loop.
• Experience building or operating MCP servers for internal tooling.
• Familiarity with RAG, vector stores, and embedding-based retrieval.
• Experience shipping LLM features to production: prompt and context design, tool calling, MCP, streaming, cost and latency control.
• Experience evaluating LLM output - test sets, regression checks, tracing.
• Experience with mobile-backend integration.
