Terma is a Danish high-tech defense and security company headquartered in Lystrup near Aarhus, Denmark, developing radar systems, aircraft self-protection, command and control software, aerostructures and space products. Founded in 1949, the group operates across Europe, the US, the Middle East and Asia, with major Danish sites in Lystrup and Søborg and space engineering teams in Darmstadt, Vienna, Munich and Prague. It hires software engineers, project and product managers, sales managers for its SCANTER radars, purchasers, financial controllers, space engineers and student workers, with security clearance required for many roles.

Would you like to solve complex engineering challenges, work with world-class experts, and contribute to advanced satellite communication technologies that make a real impact in the space industry?

We are facing an exciting future with considerable growth and demanding changes, as we deliver advanced technologies and mission critical solutions for the defense and aerospace industry. Our systems provide security for people on land, at sea and in the air. Therefore, we are looking for a Software Engineer to become part of this journey and contribute to our overall purpose - securing people through advanced technology.

Your role in our team

As our new Software Engineer, you will play a key role in developing advanced satellite communication and Software Defined Radio (SDR) technologies for Terma's Space R&D organisation. You will design, implement, test, and verify high-performance software and Digital Signal Processing (DSP) solutions for satellite communications, working throughout the entire development lifecycle.

You will collaborate closely with Software, RF, DSP, Systems Engineers, Architects, and Project Managers in a multidisciplinary environment, contributing to both product development and research activities. The role also involves supporting the integration of software with RF, FPGA, and hardware platforms, driving technical innovation, and ensuring reliable, mission-critical solutions for satellite ground systems.

You will work with both internal and external stakeholders, making strong communication and collaboration skills essential when discussing complex technical topics and supporting customer solutions.

You will become part of Terma Space R&D - Power & Ground Systems in Vienna, an international and multidisciplinary R&D environment. The team works closely with Software, RF, DSP and Systems Engineers, as well as Architects and Project Managers across Terma's Space organisation. We value collaboration, innovation and knowledge sharing, providing opportunities to contribute ideas, work across disciplines and develop cutting-edge satellite ground system technologies.

How you will make a meaningful contribution

Your key responsibilities include:

    • Lead the development and evolution of Terma’s SPECTRA Software Defined Radio (SDR) modem and associated satellite communication technologies, contributing to product architecture, technical design, and new product capabilities.
    • Design, implement, integrate, and verify advanced SATCOM and Digital Signal Processing (DSP) algorithms throughout the full software development lifecycle, including requirements engineering, architecture and design, implementation, testing, and system verification.
    • Develop advanced communication algorithms and coding schemes for satellite TT&C, SATCOM, and 5G-NTN applications, leveraging technologies such as OFDM, spread spectrum, ranging, and interferometry where applicable
    • Support the integration of software with DSP, FPGA, and RF hardware, and contribute to the development and execution of RF test systems and validation activities.
    • Conduct technical studies, investigations, and R&D activities focused on emerging communication, RF, and signal-processing technologies, while contributing to technical proposals and future product development initiatives.
    • Produce high-quality engineering documentation and provide technical support to customers during the integration, deployment, and operation of satellite ground-station systems.

Bring your world class expertise into play

You are fluent in English both in writing and verbal at a professional level. German is an advantage but not a requirement. Moreover, we are also looking for a new colleague with the following qualifications:

    • Degree in Software Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Communications Engineering, or a related technical discipline, combined with approximately 5+ years of relevant professional experience. A strong mathematical and physics foundation is highly desirable
    • Strong software engineering expertise with advanced programming skills in C, as well as solid knowledge of C++ and Python
    • Proven experience in Digital Signal Processing (DSP), digital communications, Software Defined Radio (SDR), and satellite communications, including a practical understanding of RF principles
    • Experience with GNU/Linux development, software integration, requirements-driven and test-driven development, as well as modern development tools such as GitLab CI, Docker, Kubernetes, Bash, and Python scripting
    • Ability to work across multidisciplinary engineering domains, translating complex communication and signal-processing concepts into reliable, high-performance software while collaborating effectively with technical stakeholders and customers.

You are a skilled software engineer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges and working at the intersection of software, communications, and satellite technologies. You take ownership of your work, approach problems with a structured and analytical mindset, and are motivated by delivering high-quality solutions.

As a collaborative team player, you communicate effectively with engineers, customers, and other stakeholders, and you thrive in multidisciplinary environments. You are curious, resilient, and eager to continuously learn, keeping pace with new technologies while contributing to reliable, mission-critical systems.

We are an international company representing world-class expertise, delivering complex and high-tech products. We value our colleagues and our meaningful contributions to securing people through advanced technology. You will also experience that we have a strong focus on your development, teaching you useful new competences and further strengthening current ones, both professionally and personally. Our company culture is autonomous and engaging, and we acknowledge the importance of flexibility in a great working environment.

When joining Terma, we promise that you will experience: Great people, challenging tasks, world-class expertise, and meaningful contribution in your daily work.
