Junior Naval Architect

Position Summary

Thales Canada is looking for a Junior Naval Architect to support its Non-Combatant In-Service Support Programs for the Royal Canadian Navy.

Working as part of the Naval Architecture Team, the successful candidate will support intermediate and senior engineers in the assessment, design, implementation, and documentation of repairs, redesigns, testing, and management of ship structure, lifting appliances, and marine outfitting. Responsibilities will include engineering work related to weight management, stability, deck equipment and outfitting, lifting appliances, and ship structure.

Through mentorship and practical experience, the candidate will develop skills in structural design and repair, engineering analysis, technical investigations, and engineering change management while contributing to safe, reliable, and maintainable solutions that meet customer, quality, schedule, and cost objectives.

Regulatory Compliance Requirement

This position requires direct or indirect access to hardware, software or technical information controlled under the Canadian Export Control List and/or the US the Export Administration Regulations (EAR). All applicants must be eligible or able to obtain authorization for such access.

Key Areas of Responsibility

The Junior Naval Architect may assist engineers with some or all of the following:

  • Develop and review technical documentation including equipment specifications, installation and maintenance work instructions, and test and trial procedures;
  • Conduct technical investigations into defects associated with marine equipment or structure, including failure and root cause analysis, risk assessments, and solution development;
  • Manage or support the updating of technical documentation including drawings, design and material specifications, installation and maintenance instructions, and test and trials documentation;
  • Coordinate with Program Engineers to maintain the status of lifting appliances;
  • Support stability calculations and updates, and participate in stability experimentation;
  • Support the development and review of specifications specific to vessel dry-dockings;
  • Development and review of Engineering plans, processes, and procedures;
  • Perform engineering calculations and support design reviews for foundation design, structural modifications, and weight
  • Support onboard surveys, testing, trials, and verification activities to confirm engineering solutions meet operational and technical requirements.

Minimum Requirements

  • An Engineering degree in Naval Architecture, or equivalent education in a related field with relevant experience;
  • Exposure to naval or marine engineering systems and associated standards and regulations, including IMO, SOLAS, Class Society Rules, IEC standards, and Transport Canada regulations
  • Strong planning, organizational, analytical, and time management skills;
  • High level oral and written communication skills required for report writing and design justification documentation
  • Eligible to obtain and maintain a Government of Canada Secret security clearance
  • Language: English (Essential);

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working towards obtaining P. Eng license;
  • Experience with lifting appliance testing, maintenance, and certification;
  • Experience in ship design, build, operation and maintenance;
  • Familiarity with configuration management principles and engineering change processes
  • Previous experience working with a defense contractor or the Canadian Armed Forces.
  • Experience with Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Jira, and Confluence
  • Language: French (Desirable as a first or second language, with English second or first)

Physical Demands

  • Mix of office work and work in dockyards and onboard Naval Ships;
  • Will be required to undertake inspections in machinery spaces of Naval ships involving bending and twisting;
  • May require work aloft and in confined spaces on board ships (training to be provided);

Special Position Requirements

  • Schedule: 40 hours per week
  • Overtime may be required at times to support vessel deployments
  • Work Location: Office environment, (Hybrid - Working from home and at office/dockyard)
  • Travel: Occasional domestic or international travel may be required in support of the ships;

The reference Total Target Compensation (TTC) market range for this position, inclusive of annual base salary and the variable compensation target, is between Total Target Cash (TTC) $70,000 - $80,000 -$90,000 CAD Annual.
