What We Offer

The City and County of Denver offers competitive pay commensurate with education and experience. New hires are typically brought into the organization between $25.00 - $28.00/hour, based on experience and education. Street Maintenance, a division within the City and County of Denver’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure, is responsible for keeping Denver’s streets and alleys safe, clean, and reliable year-round. The division oversees a wide range of essential services, including pothole repair, milling, paving, patching, alley maintenance, and citywide street sweeping. It also operates Denver’s asphalt plant, which produces the materials necessary to resurface and maintain the city’s transportation infrastructure. In addition, Street Maintenance leads Denver’s citywide snow response program, ensuring timely and efficient snow removal to keep roadways accessible during winter weather.

To support these critical operations, the Street Maintenance team is currently hiring for an Equipment Operator I's to join the Street Sweeping team. This role offers the opportunity to contribute directly to the maintenance and improvement of Denver’s streets, alleys, and transportation network while serving the community through all seasons.

As an Equipment Operator you will:

  • Sweeper operations, route sweeping completions, and other sweeping operations as assigned

  • Inspects vehicle for loose parts, damaged or worn tires, proper air pressure in tires, and other items affecting its safe operation and completes a pre/post trip inspection as defined by federal guidelines.

  • Provide guidance and direction to Utility Worker I and II teammates.

  • Perform semi-skilled and light to heavy physical labor on a variety of construction, maintenance, and repair projects.

  • Operate light to medium sized equipment for maintenance and minor construction projects

  • Place and remove barricades, cones, and other traffic control and safety devices in and around work areas for construction and maintenance projects in accordance with traffic regulation requirement

  • Participates in snow removal duties.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned

What You’ll Bring

Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:

  • Knowledge of city of Denver streets/alleys and use of maps

  • Previous experience with street maintenance, and other labor-related tasks

  • Experience working in various weather conditions (snow, rain, heat, etc.) and environments (dust, fumes, etc.)

  • Knowledge of city of Denver streets/alleys and use of maps

  • Desire to promote to other positions within the department

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Education Requirement: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate

  • Experience Requirement: Two (2) years of general labor experience which must include six (6) months of experience operating light to medium sized equipment.

  • Education/Experience Equivalency: Additional appropriate experience may be substituted for the minimum education requirements.

  • License/Certifications: This job requires driving. Requires a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL "B") with appropriate endorsements at the time of application. Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment

Other Important Details

  • At the time of application, candidates are required to hold a valid CDL clear of any restrictions or under prohibited status in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Clearinghouse. This position requires a background check, physical, and drug test.

  • Applicants for commercial driving positions must demonstrate proficiency in the English language. Commercial drivers must be able to do the following in English:

    • Converse with the general public

    • Understand highway traffic signs and signals

    • Respond to official inquiries

    • Make entries on reports and records
