Job Description

BASIC FUNCTION:

The Manager for Student and Young Alumni Engagement is responsible for designing, implementing, and assessing programs that foster meaningful lifelong relationships between the University and its students and young alumni. This role develops initiatives that strengthen affinity, promote engagement, and support the transition from student to active alumni community member. The Manager serves as the primary Alumni Relations liaison to student organizations, recent graduates, and campus partners to cultivate an early and lasting culture of involvement and philanthropy.

SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY:

This position does not have direct supervisory responsibilities but collaborates with student workers, volunteers, and campus partners as needed.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

The Manager operates within the Department of Alumni Relations and works closely with colleagues across Advancement, Student Affairs, Enrollment Management, Annual Giving and Academic Units. The role interacts frequently with students, recent graduates, student leaders, campus departments, alumni volunteer groups, and external stakeholders. The Manager is expected to exercise independent judgment, strong interpersonal skills, strategic thinking, and event and program management expertise. Evening and weekend work is required to support student and young alumni events.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Develop, execute, and evaluate engagement programs for undergraduate and graduate students that strengthen affinity and prepare students for lifelong alumni involvement.
  • Serve as the primary Alumni Relations liaison to major student organizations, including the School/College councils, student ambassadors, and affinity groups.
  • Advise the Howard University Pre-Alumni Association and connecting students with Alumni Clubs.
  • Coordinate senior-year experience initiatives, including senior traditions, countdown-to-graduation programming, recognition events, and philanthropic education.
  • Deliver presentations and workshops on alumni engagement, networking, professional development, and the value of alumni communities.
  • Design and manage outreach strategies to engage alumni within their first 10-15 years post-graduation.
  • Develop signature programs, volunteer opportunities, and communications tailored to the needs of early-career alumni.
  • Partner with the Manager for Career and Professional Development to promote networking opportunities, mentorship programs, and alumni-to-student connections.
  • Plan and implement young alumni events, including regional gatherings, homecoming activities, and work alongside the Manger of Reunion Programs to engage young alumni in reunions.
  • Stay informed on best practices in higher education alumni engagement, with a focus on Gen Z and emerging young alumni trends.
  • Support department-wide events and initiatives as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

CORE COMPETENCIES:

  • Advanced knowledge Historically Black Colleges University of office and administrative practices and principles.
  • Working knowledge of event planning
  • Skill in operation of computers, related software applications (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Raisers Edge, Give Campus and Workday).
  • Knowledge of standard office equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with a diverse population.
  • Must be detailed oriented and organized.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and ensure a high-level of confidentiality.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious work relations with faculty, staff, residents, students, event clients and the public.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • 1-6 years of progressive administrative and office management experience.
  • Ability to complete periodic weekend work hours

Compliance Salary Range Disclosure

Expected Salary Range: $65,000.00- $75,000.00
