The New York Times Company (NYSE: NYT) is a global mass media corporation headquartered in New York City. Founded in 1851 by Henry Jarvis Raymond and George Jones, the organization publishes its flagship daily newspaper, The New York Times, along with The International New York Times and digital media assets. Operating primarily under a digital-first, consumer-subscription model, the enterprise has expanded its portfolio through strategic acquisitions and non-news verticals.

The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

New York Times Cooking is looking for a temporary social media editor with strong writing skills, sharp strategic instincts, an eye for visuals and a love of food to join our interdisciplinary, fast-growing team through the end of the year.

In this role, you'll be responsible day to day for our Facebook account, building and publishing a high volume of engaging feed posts and video content. You'll pair food photography and video with sharp, compelling copy that inspires people to cook and ultimately drives them to NYT Cooking on platform.

This is an in-office position, based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities:

  • Build, schedule and publish a high volume of daily content on Facebook.

  • Write sharp, engaging captions and on-screen text. Workshop headlines and copy with editors to ensure everything published reflects the smart, accessible and entertaining voice of NYT Cooking.

  • Select, crop, and optimize food photography for Facebook feeds. Add text, graphics and layout elements to posts using design platforms like Figma.

  • Publish daily vertical videos on Facebook Reels to drive reach, engagements and referrals.

  • Foster community by actively engaging with our followers in Facebook comments; translate conversations happening on Facebook into actionable, relevant content and product ideas.

  • Actively participate in regular Facebook promo meetings, brainstorming creative ways to visually package and promote upcoming recipes, articles, videos and seasonal tentpoles.

  • Work towards traffic and engagement goals on our Facebook account; use analytics to make informed decisions that serve the Cooking strategy. Interpret data and signals to know what content is the right fit for what audiences at what time (holidays, seasonality, trends).

  • Track engagement rates, growth statistics, reader responses and other metrics. Regularly communicate these data points to the editorial team, translating them into actionable takeaways that shape future storytelling.

  • Collaborate with social editors of other NYT Facebook accounts, finding opportunities to reach new audiences and drive traffic back to site.

  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence  and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

  • You will report to the Assistant Editor, NYT Cooking.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience working as a social editor or manager for a brand or publication, with direct experience running high-follower Facebook accounts.

  • Exceptional editorial judgement and copywriting skills, with the ability to write clearly, concisely, and in a distinct, engaging voice.

  • Hands-on experience with social scheduling platforms, graphic design platforms like Figma, database platforms like AirTable and digital analytics software like Facebook Insights, Dash Social, ManyChat, NewsWhip and Google Analytics.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A strategic mind with a bend towards testing and iterating to find what resonates with various audiences.

  • Functional cooking knowledge or culinary experience, and a love of cooking and recipes.

  • A commitment to collaboration and collegiality.

  • Willingness to learn new skills and pitch in when needed to accomplish the goals of a small team.

  • A deep passion for food, cooking and the mission of The New York Times.

This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY.
