Job Description:

Position Purpose summary:

The Truck Driver/Warehouse Worker is responsible for pick-ups from donors to The Salvation Army Hamilton Community Services and to assist in providing a clean, well-stocked and well-organized warehouse area in conjunction with the Warehouse Supervisor. The incumbent will exercise safe, timely and careful driving and material handling procedures.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Operations:

• Complete all job-related duties in accordance with the standards, policies and procedures of The Salvation Army Hamilton Community Services.
• Make suggestions that will improve efficiency, working conditions or procedures to the Warehouse Supervisor, as required and applicable.
• Capable of driving the ministry unit’s vehicles including a Hino commercial vehicle (CVOR) as well as cube vans or panel vans.
• Ensure the safe and careful handling of all deliveries and donations, while protecting property, including donations and vehicles.
• Provide customers and donors with courteous and diplomatic service.
• Record information on pick-ups and deliveries, vehicle mileage, fuel costs and any problems encountered.

• Prepare and submit any paperwork in a timely manner as required.
• Maintain a clean and safe work environment (vehicle, warehouse, and yard).
• Provide any daily communication of service comments from ministry units, suppliers, or other contacts to supervisor.

Pick-ups and Deliveries

• Coordinate pick-up schedule with the Warehouse Supervisor or designate.
• Ensure the safe and careful handling of deliveries, pick-ups, donations and funds while protecting property including donations and the vehicle.
• Provide all customers and donors with professional and courteous service while building and maintaining positive relationships.
• Load and unload goods at the warehouse and/or designated locations.
• Assist with the receipting, recording (documentation), movement, storage, sorting, packing and distribution of food and related products for the Food Bank operation.

Vehicle Maintenance

• Perform circle checks of trucks and maintain daily Geotab vehicle logs according to the MTO and CVOR log requirements as per regulation before all trips; load and operate vehicle as per the ministry of transportation regulations.

• Responsible for daily and overall safety, general maintenance, operation of the vehicles and completion of appropriate records.
• Maintain cleanliness of program vehicles.
• Monitor and report any maintenance and repairs needs of vehicles promptly to Warehouse Supervisor or designate.
• Fuel the vehicle as necessary and ensure that the vehicle is always kept clean and presentable.

Warehouse:

• Ensure the warehouse and all Community Services/Food Bank storage areas are organized, clean and safe at all times.
• Maintain adequate inventory, reporting any surplus or deficiency to the Warehouse Supervisor.
• Ensure all products are handled, stored, and used appropriately, ensuring older products are used first.

• Operate a fork-lift/hand cart to load, unload or move food and/or toys within the centre.

• Monitor freezer and refrigerator daily; record temperatures and report any concerns to the Warehouse Supervisor as required.
• Coordinate unloading of incoming products; report any damaged goods on arrival at Ministry Unit.
• Provide regular updates to the Warehouse Supervisor or designate regarding warehouse activities.
• Provide regular updates to the Community Services workers regarding new or excess items to be distributed through the Food Bank.

Health & Safety Responsibilities

• Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.

• Maintain knowledge of legislative and company policies such as Health & Safety Regulations, provincial and municipal highway traffic acts.
• Ensure the safe and careful handling and pickup of all deliveries, donations etc. while protecting the property, including donations and vehicles.

• Responsible for the following, work in compliance with the Ontario Health & Safety Act and Regulations, use personal prescribed safety equipment and clothing as directed by the employer, report workplace hazards, dangers, injuries or illness, work in a manner as required by the employer, and report workplace injuries or illness.

• Report any vehicle safety issues immediately and ensure care is taken with all equipment and property.

• Responsible to use personal protective equipment and clothing as directed by The Salvation Army.

Perform other related duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• This is a regular part-time position based on 30 hours per week.
• Flexibility in scheduling is required during peak and/or seasonal times, and schedule may vary according to requirements of responsibilities and may include some evening and weekend work.
• Ability to lift/move 50 lbs. without assistance, and this job requires frequent twisting, bending, crouching, reaching, lifting, and kneeling.

• Working environment is typically in the warehouse or on the road conducting deliveries or pickups.

• The incumbent may work under the following disagreeable conditions, odors, dirty environment, truck fumes, extreme temperature changes in walk-in refrigerator and freezer.
• Maintain a clean drivers abstract / clean driving record (report any changes); required to Inform supervisor of any driving or vehicle infractions.

• Required to wear safety equipment as needed; steel-toed boots are required.

• Maintain a presentable appearance with clear Salvation Army logo insignia visible.
• Present a friendly and cooperative demeanor in line with salvation army standards.

Normal Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and includes a ½ hour unpaid meal break.

Please note may require a temporary increase in hours to a maximum of 37.5 hours per week to cover periods of vacation and seasonal requirements during the months of November and December.

Education and Experience Qualifications:

Education, Qualifications and Certifications

• Completion of Secondary School.

• Valid Ontario Class G driver’s license, provides a driver’s abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements

• Must have one (1) year of prior related experience driving a commercial vehicle.
• Current forklift operators’ certification or willingness to obtain is required.

• Ability to operate pallet jack and other warehouse equipment.
• Experience in shipping and handling materials.

Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

• Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
