About the opportunity

The Office of Student Life reports to the Pro Vice-Chancellor Student Life and is responsible for a wide range of student-facing initiatives that support student engagement, belonging and community across the University.

Working within the Office of Student Life, Student Life Ambassadors support the delivery of University programs and initiatives that promote a positive student experience and create opportunities for students to connect and participate in university life. Working with the assistance and guidance of the Student Life Ambassador Coordinator, the role may support programs and initiatives delivered across the PVC Student Life portfolio, central units, faculties and schools, and student groups.

With a focus on programs and practices that engage students and provide opportunities for all students to thrive at the University of Sydney, the Office of Student Life works collaboratively across the PVC Student Life Cluster, including Student Life, Student Advising, Student Wellbeing and the Learning Hub, as well as with central units, faculties and schools, student groups, clubs and associations.

Student Life Ambassadors work with a diverse range of representatives from across the University community to promote student engagement, connect students with opportunities and support a welcoming and inclusive student experience. The role will typically involve working at planned flagship on-campus events, programs and functions, while also supporting other student engagement activities throughout the year.

DECISION MAKING AND DELEGATIONS OF AUTHORITY

Routine supervision of straightforward tasks, with close supervision provided for more complex tasks. The Student Life Ambassador is expected to use initiative and sound judgement to resolve routine issues encountered during day-to-day activities, while seeking guidance or escalating matters where required.

The Student Life Ambassador is responsible for their own behaviour, conduct and decisions when representing the University of Sydney, and must act in accordance with relevant University policies, procedures and expectations. The position has no direct reports.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

• promote and encourage student participation and contribution in Student Life and the wider University community, helping foster a strong sense of belonging and connection.

• support the delivery of University events, programs and initiatives, including event logistics, wayfinding, campus navigation and providing students with general campus and University information.

• work effectively both independently and collaboratively, including as part of small teams, adapting to different event environments and changing priorities.

• participate in student surveys, focus groups and other consultation activities to contribute to the University’s understanding of student experiences and help inform decision-making on student matters.

• participate in student partnership and co-creation opportunities within the University of Sydney, contributing student perspectives to the development and improvement of programs and initiatives.

• engage with students and stakeholders in a professional, approachable and timely manner, providing clear information and escalating enquiries where appropriate.

• complete required University of Sydney training and comply with relevant University policies, procedures and health, safety and wellbeing requirements.

About you

• no previous work experience is required; however, you must be a current student at the University of Sydney.

• ability to adapt to changing work environments, priorities and event requirements, and use initiative when responding to day-to-day situations.

• ability to work enthusiastically, independently and collaboratively as part of a team, including in small groups.

• broad knowledge of the University of Sydney, including its campus, student life and community opportunities, or a demonstrated willingness to develop this knowledge.

• strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage respectfully with students and demonstrate intercultural awareness and cultural competence.

• reliable and responsive when communicating with the team, with a commitment to punctuality and attending scheduled shifts as agreed.

• well-developed verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to confidently engage with students and share clear and relevant information in an event or campus setting.
