The Voleon Group is a premier quantitative investment management firm headquartered in Berkeley, California, that specializes in machine learning-driven trading strategies. Founded in 2007 by scientists Michael Kharitonov and Jon McAuliffe, the hedge fund combines advanced data science, statistical modeling, and computational AI to forecast financial markets and execute systematic algorithmic trades.

Voleon is a technology company that applies state-of-the-art AI and machine learning techniques to real-world problems in finance. For nearly two decades, we have led our industry and worked at the frontier of applying AI/ML to investment management. We have become a multibillion-dollar asset manager, and we have ambitious goals for the future.

Your colleagues will include internationally recognized experts in machine learning research as well as highly experienced finance and technology professionals. You will be working with strategies that are at the forefront of machine learning and statistical trading. The strategies have been carefully designed to generate non-correlated returns. Our firm and its strategies are the product of many years of meticulous research and craftsmanship, and you will lead the way in bringing them to investors.

In addition to our enriching and collegial working environment, we offer highly competitive compensation and benefits packages, technology talks by our experts, a beautiful modern office, daily catered lunches, and more.

We are looking for a Technical Editor to work within the research organization, helping researchers produce documents that are well-argued, honest about their scope and limitations, and clear enough to be evaluated efficiently. The work goes beyond editing individual documents: you will also develop the standards and processes that help the research organization write more clearly and efficiently over time.

The right candidate enjoys working closely with researchers on technically demanding material and takes satisfaction in making complex arguments clearer and stronger.

Responsibilities

  • Edit research proposals, technical white papers, and internal reports for clarity, structure, and audience, preserving technical accuracy while improving readability

  • Help researchers make their strongest case for their ideas, including an honest assessment of their limitations

  • Develop and maintain editorial standards for the research organization, including style guidelines and documentation practices

  • Establish and streamline editorial workflows for drafting, revising, and submitting research documents

  • Lead writing clinics and coach research staff

  • Contribute to AI-assisted writing and editing tools

Requirements

  • Significant editing experience with technical or scientific material

  • Demonstrated ability to edit with a clear sense of purpose and audience

  • Exceptional command of grammar, style, structure, and argumentation

  • Experience developing or managing style guides, documentation practices, and editorial standards

  • Strong interpersonal and coaching skills, including the ability to explain editorial decisions in ways that make researchers more effective writers over time

  • Comfort working with quantitative subject matter
