Smarter power for industries and the grid. Purpose-built solutions for grid operators and industrial facilities.

About Torus

Torus is headquartered in Utah and is expanding manufacturing at our 545,000-square-foot facility in Salt Lake City called GigaOne. We arethe world’s first mesh energy infrastructure, uniting communities through resilient, sustainable, and intelligent power. We design, engineer, manufacture, install, and support our systems end-to-end, standing behind them throughout their lifecycle. Torus systems help reduce costs, lower emissions, and protect facilities from outages, while strengthening the security and reliability of the broader utility grid. Torus is committed to American manufacturing, engineering excellence, and building energy systems that last.

Torus has raised over $267 million from investors like Magnetar, Mercado, ICONIQ and Origin Ventures. The investments are helping to accelerate deployment of modular power plants across utilities, data centers, and industrial sectors. This investor confidence reflects the strength of our team, technology as well as the scale of the problem we are solving.

At Torus, you will be part of something larger than a single product or technology. Your work will help build energy infrastructure that supports and strengthens our electrical grid, critical systems, industry, and communities for decades to come. We value accountability, collaboration, and clear thinking. We are looking for people who want to solve hard problems and build things that matter.

About the Role

At Torus, we're building the world's first mesh energy infrastructure, systems that protect communities, reduce costs, and strengthen the grid for decades to come. As a Mechanical Engineering Intern, you'll contribute to the design, validation, and building of the sub-systems that make resilient, scalable energy storage possible.

This internship sits at the intersection of hands-on engineering and systems thinking. You'll learn how mechanical engineering decisions ripple across the full product lifecycle-from early concept through manufacturing-and how to balance cost, reliability, manufacturability, and quality as interconnected problems. You'll develop the kind of thinking that separates good engineers from great ones: understanding not just what you're building, but why it matters and how it fits into the bigger picture.

You'll thrive here if you like hard problems, want to take real ownership of projects from sketch to spec, and care about accelerating the energy transition. We value speed and quality equally-moving fast matters, but so does building it right the first time. You'll work alongside experienced mechanical and electrical engineers who'll mentor you, challenge your assumptions, and help you develop the habits and instincts of a great hardware engineer.

Who You Are

  • Inspired by Torus’ mission to build the world’s first mesh energy infrastructure, uniting communities through resilient, sustainable, and intelligent power.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow precise instructions and specifications. Must possess strong problem-solving skills to troubleshoot and resolve assembly issues effectively.
  • Safety conscious Demonstrated commitment to maintaining a safe working environment. Familiarity with safety regulations and practices related to electrical and mechanical assembly.
  • Communication Skills Ability to collaborate effectively with team members, engineers, and supervisors to ensure smooth workflow and efficient problem-solving.
  • Time Management Strong organizational and time management skills. Ability to prioritize tasks effectively to meet deadlines without compromising quality.
  • Flexibility Willingness to adapt to changing priorities and work on multiple projects simultaneously. Ability to work effectively under pressure and in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Internship Responsibilities

  • Build engineering experience by contributing to the assembly and design of products like Torus Pulse (battery energy storage) and/or Torus Spin (flywheel energy storage) products. You'll work on actual products, not simulations.
  • Learn how energy systems actually work by partnering with cross-functional teams-electrical, mechanical, manufacturing, and controls-so you understand how your design decisions ripple through the entire platform.
  • Ship design work that matters. Develop initial design projects or assembly fixture designs that accelerate manufacturing and directly improve how our systems perform in the field.

Experience

  • Continuing Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
  • Completed Freshman year (2 semesters).
  • Strong academic performance, typically reflected by a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Basic understanding of industry principles and practices relevant to the department of interest.
  • CAD Experience working with mechanical assemblies and drawings in SOLIDWORKS.
  • Machine shop and or welding experience is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Google Office Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, or similar software.
  • Previous internship or work experience in a related field is a plus, but not required.
  • Eagerness to learn and take on new challenges.
  • Ability to commit to the full duration of the internship program.
  • Availability to work the scheduled hours determined by the department's needs.
  • Authorization to work in the United States.
