We are looking for a Battery Systems Engineer to lead the design, development, and validation of advanced low-voltage battery packs. In this role, you will be responsible for battery pack architecture, mechanical integration, thermal management, cell evaluation, electrochemical testing, and safety compliance. Working closely with cross-functional teams and external suppliers, you will drive projects from concept development through prototyping, testing, and production release, ensuring high-performance, reliable, and safe energy storage solutions.

Your Roadmap to Make an Impact

• Pack design & mechanical integration: Design low-voltage battery packs, enclosures, cell modules, busbars and interconnects in CAD - from first concept through to release-ready drawings and BOMs.

• Thermal & structural layout: Develop thermal management concepts and validate them against mechanical loads, vibration and shock requirements of the target application.

• Cell selection & benchmarking: Evaluate and qualify cells from different suppliers; build the data basis for design decisions on energy density, power capability, cycle life and cost.

• Electrochemical testing: Plan, run and evaluate cell and module tests - capacity and rate characterisation, EIS, ageing and cycle-life campaigns, thermal characterisation - and derive design conclusions from the results.

• Test infrastructure: Set up and maintain test benches, fixtures and measurement chains; build repeatable test procedures and keep the data properly documented and traceable.

• Prototyping & validation: Build and instrument prototype packs, run the validation programme, and feed findings back into the next design iteration.

• Safety & standards: Support hazard and risk assessments, define protection concepts (fusing, isolation, venting, propagation resistance) and prepare packs for the relevant transport and product standards (e.g. UN 38.3, IEC 62133).

• Interface management: Coordinate technically with mechanics, electronics/BMS, manufacturing and purchasing, and act as the technical counterpart to external cell and component suppliers.

Requirements

• Completed degree in engineering or natural sciences - electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, mechatronics, chemistry, physics or materials science.

• Roughly 3-5 years of hands-on experience in battery development, ideally with low-voltage packs for mobile or embedded applications.

• Solid understanding of lithium-ion cell chemistry and electrochemistry, cell-to-pack architecture and thermal behavior.

• Confident with CAD (e.g. Siemens NX, SolidWorks or CATIA); experience with design for manufacturing and joining technologies for cell contacting (welding, bonding) is a plus.

• Solid understanding of state estimation, balancing, thermal control and their interaction with pack hardware

• Practical experience with cell cyclers, climate chambers, EIS, data acquisition and general lab measurement technique is a plus.

• Comfortable evaluating test data with Python or MATLAB; basic familiarity with thermal or electrical simulation is welcome.

• Working knowledge of the safety, testing and transport standards relevant to lithium-ion batteries.

• Analytical, structured way of working, hands-on mentality in the lab, and the ability to work across disciplines in a small, fast-moving team.

• Languages: Fluent English; German is a plus.

Nice to Have

• Experience with aerospace, UAV or other weight-critical applications

• Experience taking a pack from prototype to small-series production
