Love uncovering stories, asking questions and keeping people in the know? Want to be the voice behind the news that matters to UC students?

We're looking for a curious, creative and enthusiastic News Editor to join the Canta team in 2027!

Canta is the official student magazine and media platform of the University of Canterbury. Since 1930, we've been entertaining, informing and challenging the UC community, sharing the stories that matter to students across print and digital platforms.

Created by students, for students, Canta is all about celebrating student voices, sparking conversations and keeping campus life interesting.

As News Editor, you'll be at the heart of what's happening on campus and beyond, finding the stories worth telling and bringing them to life. From breaking campus news to exploring issues impacting students, you'll help keep the UC community informed, engaged and connected.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Find the stories that matter - Keep your finger on the pulse of campus life, current affairs and issues impacting UC students.

  • Bring news to life - Research, write and produce engaging, accurate and relevant news content for Canta's print and digital platforms.

  • Work with the other Editors- Collaborate with the Print Editor and Digital Editor to develop and deliver newsworthy content.

  • Get the facts right - Ensure news content is well-researched, factual and meets Canta's editorial standards and processes.

Is This You?

You're a current University of Canterbury student with a passion for journalism, storytelling and keeping students informed about what's happening in their world.

You might be studying journalism, communications, media or a related field, or you might already have experience writing, editing or producing content.

We're looking for someone who brings:

  • A genuine interest in news, current affairs and issues affecting students.

  • Strong writing, editing and research skills, with an eye for detail.

  • Experience creating written or digital content.

  • Curiosity, initiative and the confidence to ask questions and explore different perspectives.

  • Great communication and organisational skills, with the ability to meet deadlines.

  • A collaborative attitude and enthusiasm for working with a creative student team.

Why Join Canta?

This is your chance to:

  • Gain hands-on experience in journalism and student media.

  • Build your writing portfolio and develop your editorial skills.

  • Report on real stories and issues that matter to UC students.

  • Work alongside a talented and creative team of fellow students.

  • Make your mark on one of UC's most iconic student platforms.
