Oracle Database Administrator - Business Availability & Disaster Recovery

Position Summary

This role leads Business Availability and Disaster Recovery planning for Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server database environments, ensuring high availability and validated recovery objectives across production, test, development, and disaster recovery systems.

It draws on a strong background in Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server database administration, including design, installation, configuration, and maintenance of database management systems, to keep the data environment finely tuned and resilient. That background also supports establishing and maintaining security and integrity controls, designing and building relational databases, and working with software developers and data users to recommend appropriate database solutions.

Core Responsibilities

Leadership & Strategy

• Leads Business Availability and Disaster Recovery strategy for Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server database environments across the organization.

• Works with leadership to define, develop, and recommend database and related data management policies and procedures that support business availability and recovery objectives.

Business Availability Responsibilities

• Drives end-to-end availability, performance monitoring, and capacity planning for Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server environments.

• Optimizes database access and allocates/re-allocates database resources for optimum configuration, performance, and cost.

• Supports multiple services and databases with diverse concurrent users, ensuring control, integrity, and accessibility of data.

• Monitors and tunes Oracle and SQL Server database performance, including query optimization, indexing strategies, execution plan analysis, and capacity management to ensure optimal performance and availability.

Disaster Recovery Responsibilities

• Owns and validates high-availability and disaster recovery configurations, including Oracle Data Guard, RAC, SQL Server Always On Availability Groups, Failover Cluster Instances (FCI), replication, and log shipping, to meet recovery objectives.

• Manages database backup / recovery and configures parameters and prototypes designed against logical data models.

• Ensures Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server disaster recovery environments are installed, configured, and maintained in alignment with production systems.

Supporting Database Administration Background

• Provides database administration support (installation, configuration, patching, and troubleshooting) for Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server environments across production, test, and development systems, as needed to support availability and DR objectives.

• Advises on automation tooling, scripting platforms, and monitoring systems relevant to Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server environments.

• Automates database administration tasks through scripting, scheduling, monitoring, and maintenance processes, and supports policy and procedure improvements affecting availability and reliability.

• Coordinates with data users and stakeholders on recommendations to address availability and reliability issues.

You will be successful in this role if you have:

• BA/BS degree and 6-8 years of relevant experience OR equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Deep expertise in Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server database design, administration, performance tuning, and optimization.

• Demonstrated ability to lead complex technical projects related to Business Availability and Disaster Recovery design.

• Expert-level knowledge of High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) solutions for Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server environments, including Oracle Data Guard, RAC, SQL Server Always On Availability Groups, Failover Cluster Instances (FCI), replication, log shipping, and backup/recovery strategies.

• Experience installing, configuring, patching, upgrading, and administering Microsoft SQL Server 2016/2019/2022 or later versions.

• Experience with SQL Server security, database backup and recovery, maintenance plans, SQL Server Agent, monitoring tools, and database migration activities.

• Experience with performance tuning, indexing, query optimization, and troubleshooting database performance issues in both Oracle and SQL Server environments.

• U.S. Citizenship and U.S. residency required.
