Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

We’re looking for an Editor - Digital Content to join our Communications team and bring stories from across the University to life through engaging, high-quality digital content.

This is a hands-on creative role where you’ll work across video, photography, podcasting, and other digital formats, taking stories from concept through to filming, editing, production, and publication.

You’ll help showcase the people, research, discoveries, and ideas shaping the University of Auckland, while creating content that supports media opportunities, strategic communications, and audience engagement across Aotearoa and beyond.

You’ll work closely with academics, researchers, media advisers, social and digital specialists, faculties, and professional teams to identify stories and bring them to life across different channels and audiences.

This is also an opportunity to help shape our approach to digital storytelling. You’ll bring your knowledge of emerging platforms, technologies, AI, audience behaviour and digital trends, while looking for new and creative ways to engage our audiences.

Key responsibilities (not limited to):

  • Create compelling digital stories across video, photography, podcasting, and other multimedia formats.
  • Find and develop stories that support University priorities, media opportunities, reputation, and strategic communications.
  • Take stories from concept to publication, including filming, photography, audio recording, video editing, production, and digital publishing.
  • Keeping up with digital trends, emerging technologies, AI, platforms and changing audience behaviours.
  • Provide digital and multimedia advice, helping colleagues develop content that is engaging, accessible, and fit for purpose.

This is a full-time, (37.5 hours per week) permanent opportunity. The full salary range is $87,000 to $118,000 per annum, depending on skills and experience (Band G).

We have a structured salary framework with three zones: developing (those developing into the role), fully effective (target), and contributing beyond what is expected of the role (upper). Appointments are typically made within the target range of $93,200 - $107,500 per annum, depending on skills, experience, and internal equity.

He kōrero mōu | About you

We’re looking for an experienced digital content professional with strong creative, technical, and editorial skills.

You’ll bring:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent experience in multimedia storytelling, journalism, communications, digital media, video production or a related field.
  • Proven experience creating high-quality digital and multimedia content, particularly video, photography, podcasting and digital publishing.
  • Strong technical skills in video production, photography, editing and digital content production, with the ability to take a story from idea through to publication.
  • A good understanding of how people consume digital content and how to adapt stories for different audiences, platforms and channels.
  • Sound editorial judgement and a strong eye for accuracy, accessibility, detail and quality.
  • Strong relationship-building and collaboration skills, with the confidence to work with academics, researchers, professional staff and communications specialists.
  • A genuine interest in digital trends, emerging technologies, AI, analytics, platforms and new ways of telling stories.
  • The ability to work independently, take initiative and make sound decisions in a complex organisation.

Experience working in a media, tertiary or institutional communications environment would be an advantage, as would experience with Shorthand or similar long-form digital storytelling platforms.
