JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for managing research activities within the Precision Diabetes Research Program at BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute, led by Dr Angela Devlin and Dr Dina Panagiotopoulos. The research program focuses on understanding the pathophysiology of pediatric diabetes and improving outcomes and treatment of children and adolescents living with diabetes.

The research program includes longitudinal cohort studies that collect data from children living with diabetes or at risk of diabetes to phenotype the children and further the understanding of the trajectory of diabetes and the development of complications. These research programs are delivered with the support of research staff and trainees at the undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral level.

The research manager will work with all team members to meet research goals and objectives. The incumbent will be responsible for managing a full range of research activities including preparing ethics applications and study protocols, identifying funding sources and coordinating grant application submissions, supporting adherence to study protocols and reporting, managing human resources and financial administrations, communicating with funders with project progress and updates, support of research trainees, managing lab communications and knowledge translation activities, and oversee program public outreach and community engagement.

ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS

This position will report directly to Dr. Angela Devlin and Dr Dina Panagiotopoulos.

WORK PERFORMED

• In collaboration with Principal Investigators, lead and implement project proposals, translating program priorities into work plans and timelines
• Develop project budgets and forecasts, oversee research grant expenditures (with accountability for budgets and risk management); determine eligible expenses against budget allocations), prepare financial reports.
• Leads the document review process alongside researchers, identifying funding sources, advise on funding strategies and developing funding applications. Work with principal investigators to identify and explore funding opportunities, and help develop ideas into grant proposals
• Draft and submit ethics applications for research projects, liaises with UBC/C&W Ethics Committees on ethics approvals, renewals, and assists in resolving related issues.
• Monitor study progress to ensure that deadlines are met (including reporting requirements), project deliverables are achieved, and research is conducted in compliance with study procedures. Escalates risks and provides advice where required.
• Provide advice to Principal Investigators regarding various funding opportunities.
• Collaborate in the preparation and submission of grant applications through expertise in ORS and RISe requirements and processes, and provision of budget recommendations.
• Oversee research agreements and grants between sponsors and UBC/BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute. This includes working with the Office of Research Services (ORS) to establish research project grants.
• Collaborate in the hiring, onboarding, and evaluation of research staff and trainees. This includes drafting job descriptions for classification, posting student and staff positions, interviewing prospective candidates and providing recommendations on hires.
• Manage staff; oversees human resources needs for the lab in consultation with the Principal Investigators.
• Communicate project activity to participating agencies and funding partners when required, provide information and explain project objectives.
• Promote the program through communication initiatives outlining program research achievements and supporting broader knowledge translation and impact activities
• Lead a public/patient engagement strategy related to meeting the needs of research participants and in support of a broader culture that integrates research within clinical care.
• Coordinate engagement with affiliated investigators and scientist to the research program through scholarly knowledge exchange activities (e.g. research rounds) and research capacity building activities.
• Act as a primary resource and subject matter expert to all principal investigators, staff and trainees, in relations to university, departmental, and PHSA policies.
• Prepare abstracts and presentation of findings for conferences and related research events.
• Prepare and lead the development of content for academic manuscripts, technical reports, research proposals, and presentations.
• Manage laboratory assessments including biomarker assessments (e.g., autoantibody testing) and genetic risk scores.
• Mentor trainees and research staff members.
• Perform other related duties as required.
• Keep up-to-date with new applications, and technology for nutritional assessment and cardiometabolic disease risk assessment in children.

The position requires a high degree of discretion, judgment and initiative. The candidate must exercise sound judgement in all facets of research activities, makes professional decisions and must conduct all activities in an ethical manner. Inappropriate judgements and/or decisions may have significant impact on the reputation, credibility, collaboration, and financial status for the research lab.

The incumbent will work independently with minimal supervision. The principal investigator(s) will provide directions as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Graduate degree preferred. Minimum of three years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience working in a pediatric clinical research environment, with relevant experience in developing and writing technical materials (research ethics, summary of research projects) preferred. Exceptional project management skills with the ability to maintain accuracy and attention to details. Ability to analyze problems, identify key information, and effectively resolve issues.

Strong experience in biomedical laboratory analyses.

Demonstrated experience in Human Resources administration and staff management, including hiring, onboarding, supervision, performance management, and coordination of multiple research staff.

Have key understanding of the process of research projects from proposals to publications. Excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to work both independently and within a multidisciplinary team and be able to meet deadlines. Ability to assess and implement work required to achieve research goals, strong organizational skills, diplomacy and the ability to provide leadership in creating positive and supportive work environments. Experience and knowledge of UBC and PHSA policies, procedures, governance and administrative systems in budgeting, financial reporting, and procurement is an asset.
