Job Description Summary

Organization's Summary Statement:

The Laboratory for MicroTechnologies and the Neurobiology Lab at the University of Maryland are seeking a postdoctoral scientist to conduct biomolecular research. The researcher will join a multidisciplinary team working on a cell-based artificial nose (e-nose). E-nose technology is expected to have applications in a wide range of areas, including medical diagnostics, agriculture, the food and perfume industries, and public safety. The research is being performed collaboratively at the University of Maryland, College Park and the Anhydrobiosis Research Group in the National Institute of Agrobiological Sciences (NARO) in Tsukuba, Japan. It is anticipated that the researcher will work primarily at NARO (8-9 months/year) but also at UMD (3-4 months/year). There is no requirement to speak Japanese; NARO lab members speak English. The project is funded under the NSF program Emerging Frontiers in Research and Innovation: Engineered Living Systems (EFRI ELiS).

The researcher will work to optimize methods of inserting genes for olfactory receptors and genetically encoded fluorescent sensors into cell lines and to characterize odor responses using imaging techniques. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in cellular or molecular biology, or a similar field, and a background in modern molecular biology techniques, including cloning and expression systems and functional assays. The researcher will also provide input into the development of a portable device for artificial olfaction using machine learning to identify odorant signatures. The position provides the opportunity for contributing to research study design, working collaboratively and internationally, writing scientific manuscripts, giving presentations at conferences, and applying for intellectual property protection.

The A. James Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland catalyzes high-quality research, innovation, and learning, preparing our students to create innovations that will address the 21st century Grand Challenges (e.g., energy, environment, security, and human health) and improve the human condition. The Clark School is dedicated to leading and transforming the engineering discipline and profession, accelerating entrepreneurship, and transforming research and learning activities into innovations that benefit millions.
