Job Summary:

The Information Quality Lab in the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Information School seeks a Postdoctoral Fellow to conduct research in the areas of research quality, scientometrics, and metascience, under the mentorship of Dr. Jodi Schneider.

In this role you will receive mentoring and community support to prepare for permanent appointments both inside and outside of academia. The successful candidate will work with Dr. Schneider to create an individual development plan.

The successful candidate will lead, conduct, and publish research, and write grant proposals, in an interdisciplinary environment. Key work will be to (1) conduct a scoping review of the literature; and (2) to develop and test scientometric indicators of epistemic integrity, methodological rigor, and innovation for the project CULTIVATE: Transforming Scientific Systems by Cultivating Virtue Ethics in Scientists. CULTIVATE is led by a team of three UW-Madison faculty members: Dr. Schneider (bibliometrics); a clinical psychologist at the Center for Healthy Minds (psychometrics); and an STS-inflected historian the UW-Madison Department of Medical History and Bioethics (ethnographic and qualitative analysis to guide bibliometric development).

In this role, you can expect to:

• Lead, conduct, and publish research in consultation with Dr. Schneider
• Design research projects, write grant proposals, and mentor junior researchers
• Develop and execute a personal individual development plan to become eligible for permanent positions in your field, both inside and outside of academia, under the guidance of Dr. Schneider

Key Job Responsibilities:

• These criteria do not prevent the university of the extramural source of funds from receiving some benefit from the appointee's activities. Activities still may be of value to the extramural grantor, or may be useful internally to the university in satisfaction of other grant or contract requirements. The test is whether the work undertaken by the appointee is a necessary and relevant part of the appointee's learning program. However, the "primary benefit" test outlined above does forbid assigning tasks to the appointee which are unnecessary and irrelevant to the learning program or are repetitive beyond that which is necessary to achieve excellence in the activity, even if these tasks do not constitute the major portion of the appointee's activities. Except in rare cases, stipends paid to postdoctoral fellows or trainees are not excludable from gross income for purposes of income tax and thus are fully taxable. Since such stipends are not wages, however, the University will not withhold taxes from monthly stipend checks. Therefore, trainees and fellows may be required to pay estimated taxes on a quarterly basis.

• Appointments as postdoctoral fellows and postdoctoral trainees should be made only if it can be demonstrated that the appointee's activities are primarily for the benefit of the appointee's own learning and research. Otherwise, it is more appropriate to use an employment title such as researcher or scientist. Employment titles apply whenever the duties assigned are under the direct supervision and control of the employer and are primarily for the benefit of the University or granting agency. The work of individuals appointed as postdoctoral fellows or postdoctoral trainees should be independent or self-directed, subject only to such supervision as might be given by a teacher to a student.

Compensation:

The expected salary for this position is $70,000. This appointment includes fringe benefits described at the University of Wisconsin - Madison Human Resources website.

Required Qualifications:

• Interest in interdisciplinary research.
• Excellent critical thinking, written and spoken English, and project management skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Training and/or publications in fields relevant to meta-research or meta-science, such as scientometrics or data-intensive research about science.
• Training and/or publications in formal literature reviewing methodologies.
• Evidence of interdisciplinary research through scholarly publications or translational / implementation science projects.
• Interest or experience in mixed methods research.
• Interest or experience in grant writing.
• Interest or experience mentoring undergraduate and graduate student research.
• The ability to contribute to a positive, collaborative climate with students, faculty, and staff.

Education:

A PhD in any field (including, but not limited to, metascience, science of science, informatics, science policy, information sciences, information studies, library & information science, computational social sciences, etc.), earned within the last 5 years.
