USAA is an American financial services group founded in 1922 by a group of army officers who could not obtain vehicle insurance because their profession was considered too risky, and who agreed to insure one another instead. It remains a reciprocal inter-insurance exchange owned by its members, and eligibility is restricted to serving and former military personnel and their families, which gives it a defined and unusually loyal customer base.
