USAA is an American financial services group founded in 1922 by a group of army officers who could not obtain vehicle insurance because their profession was considered too risky, and who agreed to insure one another instead. It remains a reciprocal inter-insurance exchange owned by its members, and eligibility is restricted to serving and former military personnel and their families, which gives it a defined and unusually loyal customer base. Headquartered in San Antonio, it sells property and casualty insurance, banking, life insurance and investments, and it consistently ranks at the top of American customer satisfaction surveys.
