Aspire Software is looking for a talented Intermediate Software Developer, you will be responsible for rebuilding legacy component into a modern, testable .net stack, enhancing IIS-based deployments for on-premise customers and contributing to DevOps maturity .

We are seeking an experienced software developer who enjoys solving difficult application and data problems, connecting systems that were not originally designed to work together, and helping established ERP products evolve. This person will maintain and enhance business-critical applications built on Rocket UniVerse and related MultiValue technology while also developing integrations and making practical use of modern development, API, automation, and AI-assisted tools. The applications support accounting, financial reporting, revenue collection, payroll, and other essential operations for school districts and local governments.
The role combines core software engineering with elements of forward-deployed engineering: working directly with customers and internal product experts, conducting technical discovery, scoping the right solution, building or adapting it, and carrying the work through deployment and adoption.
Direct Rocket UniVerse experience would be highly valuable, but it is not required for a developer with strong backend and data skills, sound judgment, curiosity, and a demonstrated ability to learn unfamiliar technologies. The right candidate will be comfortable working in both mature code and newer technical environments and will understand that modernization is usually an incremental business process, not simply a rewrite.
Primary responsibilities
- Read, maintain, troubleshoot, and extend code within Keystone's Rocket UniVerse and MultiValue ERP applications.
- Lead technical discovery for complex requests by examining the customer's workflow, data, existing systems, constraints, and definition of success.
- Own technical delivery from early prototype or proof of concept through design, development, testing, production rollout, stabilization, and customer adoption.
- Investigate complex application behavior and data issues across code, database structures, business rules, interfaces, and operational processes.
- Design and build reliable integrations with third-party systems using REST APIs, web services, secure file exchange, imports, exports, and other appropriate methods.
- Develop practical modernization approaches that improve maintainability, interoperability, security, and user experience without disrupting critical customer operations.
- Make sound tradeoffs among scope, speed, quality, maintainability, and customer impact, identifying risks and blockers early enough to protect delivery.
- Work directly with product and support staff, and at times with customers, to understand business needs and turn them into clear technical solutions.
- Create diagnostic utilities, conversion programs, data corrections, and repeatable automation for support and implementation needs.
- Review production issues, determine root causes, implement durable fixes, and communicate technical findings in language that non-developers can understand.
- Use AI-assisted development tools responsibly to accelerate investigation, code comprehension, prototyping, documentation, and testing while carefully validating accuracy and security.
- Document code, integrations, data structures, and operating procedures so that knowledge is shared across the team.
- Convert successful customer-specific solutions into reusable components, utilities, deployment patterns, and playbooks where practical.
- Bring field feedback to product and development discussions so recurring customer needs can influence application priorities and roadmaps.
- Provide technical guidance and collaborate with other developers and analysts on design, testing, deployment, and support.
Requirements
- Substantial professional software development experience, ideally in enterprise applications, ERP systems, financial systems, payroll, public-sector software, or another transaction-intensive environment.
- Strong backend development and data problem-solving skills, including the ability to understand unfamiliar schemas, data relationships, indexes, and business rules.
- Experience integrating disparate systems and working with APIs, data exchanges, middleware, or ETL-style processes.
- Experience delivering technical work directly with customers or business stakeholders, including discovery, scoping, rollout, and post-deployment follow-through.
- Ability to diagnose problems in systems that span application code, data, interfaces, infrastructure, and user workflow.
- Experience working across more than one technology stack and a record of learning new languages, tools, or platforms when the work requires it.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with technical and nontechnical colleagues.
- Good judgment about production changes, data integrity, testing, security, and the risks of modifying long-standing business applications.
Preferred experience
- Rocket UniVerse, UniData, or another MultiValue database and development environment.
- UniVerse BASIC, dictionaries, file structures, indexing, query tools, and MultiValue data conventions.
- Modern web development, RESTful services, JSON, XML, authentication, and cloud or hosted application environments.
- Application modernization, legacy system integration, source control, automated testing, or DevOps practices.
- Business applications for school districts or local governments, particularly financial reporting, general ledger, purchasing, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, tax billing and collection, utility billing, planning and zoning, or business licensing.
What success looks like
Within the first year, this person will be able to independently trace and resolve difficult application and data problems, make meaningful contributions in the UniVerse environment, and deliver or improve integrations with outside systems. The role will also reduce dependence on individual subject-matter experts by improving documentation, tools, and shared technical understanding.
