Position Purpose:

Reporting to the Senior Director of Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS), the Senior Environmental, Health, and Safety Manager (Sr. EHS Mgr.) will support the development and implementation of the Division environmental, health and safety and security (EHS&S) strategy. Incumbent interfaces with the corporate EHS team to implement corporate initiatives at the Division and Region level.

Under limited direction, serve as the Regional contact responsible for evaluating, coordinating development and implementation, and supporting EHS&S risk programs in their assigned region to allow management to monitor, and strengthen compliance with EHS&S regulations. Will take action to support compliance with federal and state EHS&S regulations and requirements including advising managers on safe work methods, practices and the elimination of hazardous conditions and environmental hazards. Investigates incidents including near miss events to identify and reduce root causes at the project and throughout the region and manage the necessary reporting to ensure proper reporting both internally and to external regulatory agencies. The role will require field presence including oversight, operational support, and direction for all EHS programs, working with the corporate team to improve the effectiveness of EHS activities, coach operational safety leaders and provide training to develop and strengthen all staff's knowledge and field execution of safe work and environmental practices.

Primary Duties/Responsibilities:

  • In coordination with the Senior Director of EHS develop and provide safety leadership training, workshops, coaching and resources.
  • Conduct risk assessments to identify project and region opportunities. Communicate risk and develop, implement, and manage EHS risk reduction plans. Will include support to the EHS audit program.
  • Serves as a mentor and resource for Site Safety Coordinators and Project Management.
  • Lead Division training program in consultation with the Senior Director of EHS. Act as Division lead for Corporate training initiatives. Develop EHS training resources and provide field training and coaching for site trainers.
  • Support safety culture assessments (Deep Dives) and development of strategy to engage staff and improve sustainability of EHS programs.
  • Support implementation of EHS leading indicator and behavioral based safety, conventional observation and unique implementation for specific project needs, to support proactive safe behaviors.
  • Provide EHS due diligence for new business and EHS support for Project Start-Ups.
  • Assist operations with compliance for applicable environmental and H&S regulations.
  • Coordinates industrial hygiene support to protect employee’s health.
  • In coordination with the Senior Director of EHS support Senior Leadership team meetings and activities.
  • Assist in review, update, and development of corporate EHS standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Manage, assist and support documentation of investigations to ensure identification of causal factors and support risk reduction plans. Includes coordination with workers’ compensation coordinator.
  • Monitor and maintain EHS data, review OSHA logs, and provide periodic EHS reports.
  • Assists in the development of Project EHS budgets and Project EHS goal setting.

Work Environment:

  • Spends 40% of time in an office environment and 60% at projects.
  • Travel may periodically be on short notice.
  • Project exposure includes facility, remote locations and field environments including work zones.
  • Frequent travel is expected.
  • Must be available for on-call response to emergencies.
  • Possible Work Hazards: May be exposed to hazards including high noise, heavy machinery, chemicals, outside weather conditions and temperature extremes when visiting plant and field environments. Will be routinely required to wear personal protective equipment where appropriate due to location and task hazards. Protective equipment includes, but is not limited to, safety eyewear, footwear, hard hat, gloves, hearing protection, and specialized clothing where applicable. Exposed to possible travel hazards.

Education/Experience/Background:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Safety, environmental engineering, or equivalent.
  • 7-10 years of related experience in Environmental, Health & Safety and Security compliance.
  • 5 years of work experience in the water and wastewater industry, laboratory, or other utility industry.
  • Successful record of coaching and developing safety engagement and leaders.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Strong coaching, presentation and teaching skills.
  • Strong communication (oral and written), interpersonal skills and problem solving abilities.
  • Strong aptitude for strategy development and execution.
  • Ability to balance changing and potentially conflicting priorities.
  • Ability to self-organize, prioritize, and drive own work schedule.
  • Ability to work individually, in a team and interact with all levels within the Region.
  • Maintain thorough and specialized knowledge of health and safety (OSHA), security (DHS) and environmental (EPA) guidelines and corresponding state requirements.
  • Willing and able to work with field staff evaluating, coaching, and supporting safety and environmental compliance extensively (70%).
  • Willing and able to travel extensively (50-70%).
  • Must be available (24/7) to respond to & assist with injury and/or environmental emergencies.
  • Willing to work extended work schedules (as needed) to accomplish Division’s needs.
  • Proficient knowledge of Google programs including Sheets, Docs, Gmail, and Slides.

Required Certification/Licenses/Training:

  • OSHA 10hr Construction certification or the ability and willingness to obtain this certification is required.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or the ability and willingness to obtain these certifications is desired.
  • Must hold a valid driver license with a satisfactory driving record to maintain minimum company required insurance coverage.

Physical Requirements:

  • Regularly stands, walks, climbs stairs and ladders, sits; uses hands and fingers, reaches with hands and arms, stoops, kneels, crouches, or smells.
  • Ability to tolerate confined spaces, heights, lift and carry materials with the capacity of lifting 50 pounds.
  • Vision abilities required by this job include distinguishing color, close and distance vision.
  • Position may require long periods of time sitting in front of and working on a computer.
  • Position requires frequent travel by auto.

Pay Range: $115000 to $140000 per year.
