Job Description
Senior Counsel will be responsible for providing legal support a variety of internal clients in Visa's Canada Office.
Accountabilities:
- Draft, negotiate, and review complex commercial contracts and other legally binding documents
- Provide advice and counsel in the interpretation and enforcement of contracts.
- Provide advice on regulatory issues including the Retail Payments Activities Act, the Code of Conduct for the Payment Card Industry in Canada and regulatory regimes affecting Visa’s Canadian clients (e.g. the Bank Act, OSFI guidelines, etc.)
- Support regulatory compliance and Visa’s relationship with the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) and the Bank of Canada.
Visa requires at least 3 days in office, expectations of these days will be confirmed by your Hiring Manager.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
- 8 years of relevant experience.
- Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school.
- Current member in good standing of a State Bar with the ability to become barred or a registered in-house counsel in the state where this role is located.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Required Education: JD or LLB with strong academic credentials and admitted to Ontario Bar.
- Experience: 8+ years experience in top law firm and/or in-house environments.
- Significant experience drafting, negotiating and interpreting complex commercial agreements
- Experience with regulations affecting the payments/financial services industry, including knowledge of the Retail Payments Activities Act, the Bank Act, anti-money laundering and consumer protection
- Strong people skills with proven ability to build strong working relationships with internal clients at all levels of management and work on cross functional teams.
- Versatility, ability to prioritize and handle a large number of matters, ability to work effectively and collegially on a small legal team with significant workload.
- Self starter and ability to work independently.
