About the role

Our client is currently looking for an experienced HSE Manager to support a pharmaceutical construction project that is entering the fit-out phase.

The successful candidate will take responsibility for health, safety and environmental oversight across the project, helping to ensure that works are carried out safely, efficiently and in line with the required site standards and regulations.

This is a short-term assignment running for approximately six weeks through to 30 November, making it well suited to an experienced HSE professional who is immediately available and comfortable working in a fast-paced construction environment.

A recognised SUVA qualification is required for the position, alongside previous experience working within construction or similarly regulated project environments. Given the requirements of the project and the site team, German language skills are essential.

The role requires a strong presence on site, with an expected working pattern of 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week. You will work closely with construction management, contractors and other project stakeholders to identify risks, maintain safety standards and support the safe progression of fit-out activities.

Main responsibilities

  • Take responsibility for HSE management across the pharmaceutical construction fit-out project.
  • Provide visible and proactive health and safety leadership across the site.
  • Monitor construction and fit-out activities to ensure compliance with relevant HSE requirements.
  • Carry out regular site inspections and identify potential hazards, unsafe practices and areas requiring corrective action.
  • Support the project team in implementing appropriate health, safety and environmental procedures.
  • Review and monitor risk assessments and method statements for ongoing works.
  • Ensure appropriate control measures are in place before and during construction activities.
  • Advise site management, contractors and workers on HSE requirements and safe working practices.
  • Support the implementation and monitoring of site-specific HSE plans.
  • Investigate incidents, near misses and other safety-related events where required.
  • Assist with the identification of root causes and implementation of appropriate corrective and preventative measures.
  • Monitor contractor compliance with site HSE procedures and standards.
  • Support toolbox talks, safety briefings and other HSE communications.
  • Maintain accurate HSE documentation, inspection records and reports.
  • Escalate significant HSE risks and issues to the appropriate project leadership.
  • Work collaboratively with construction managers, contractors, engineers and other site stakeholders.
  • Promote a strong safety culture across the project team.
  • Ensure HSE considerations are incorporated into ongoing fit-out activities and project planning.
  • Support the project team in maintaining a safe working environment through to completion of the assignment.

Requirements

  • Proven experience working as an HSE Manager, HSE Engineer or similar senior health and safety position.
  • Previous experience within construction, ideally including pharmaceutical or highly regulated environments.
  • Experience supporting construction fit-out activities.
  • Recognised SUVA qualification.
  • Strong understanding of construction health and safety requirements.
  • Experience carrying out site inspections, risk assessments and safety audits.
  • Experience working with contractors and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Strong understanding of safe systems of work and construction site controls.
  • Ability to identify hazards, assess risks and implement appropriate corrective actions.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work confidently in a site-based environment and engage with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Fluent German language skills.
  • Ability to commit to 40 hours per week for the duration of the assignment.
  • Availability for the full assignment through to 30 November.
