Role Overview

We are looking for a hands-on Quality Engineer to join our RAMS team, working closely with Software Developers, Product and Customer Success to ensure quality is built into our products from the beginning rather than tested only at the end.

This is an embedded, shift-left Quality Engineering role where you will work across the stack, develop automated tests at multiple levels, investigate customer-reported issues and, where appropriate, implement smaller bug fixes and enhancements yourself.

The RAMS team works extensively with the financial side of our platform, including trust-account banking, payments, debit orders, billing and landlord/tenant accounting. This means quality goes beyond testing functionality - you will need to understand financial processes and ensure balances, allocations, payment splits and statements are accurate.

We are looking for someone who takes genuine ownership of quality and is comfortable challenging, improving and championing good testing practices across the squad.

Key Responsibilities

• Write and maintain backend feature and unit tests within Laravel/PHP, working alongside Developers to continuously improve test coverage.
• Build and maintain Playwright and TypeScript automated tests for critical end-to-end user journeys.
• Perform API testing using Playwright, validating expected behaviour, contracts and edge cases.
• Test financial workflows end-to-end, including balances, payment splits, allocations, billing, payments and statements.
• Work closely with Developers from the beginning of the development lifecycle to identify risks and potential issues early.
• Review requirements and acceptance criteria to ensure features are clear, testable and appropriately covered.
• Pair with Developers and contribute to a strong shift-left testing culture within the squad.
• Investigate, reproduce and diagnose defects and customer-reported issues.
• Participate in the support triage rotation, working with Customer Success to understand and prioritise incoming issues.
• Where appropriate, implement small bug fixes and product enhancements rather than simply handing defects back to Developers.
• Continuously improve automated testing practices, tooling and coverage.
• Advocate for quality standards and ensure testing and coverage are not compromised under delivery pressure.

AI-Enabled Quality Engineering

AI forms an important part of how our engineering teams work. We expect our Quality Engineers to use modern AI development tools to improve both the speed and quality of testing, while applying strong technical judgement to the outputs produced.

You will use AI tools to:

• Understand unfamiliar codebases, functionality and technical problems.
• Design and evaluate testing approaches and coverage.
• Generate, refactor and review automated test code.
• Build and expand automated test suites.
• Debug complex issues and identify potential edge cases.
• Research testing tools, technologies and approaches.
• Produce clear technical and testing documentation.

We are not looking for someone who simply accepts AI-generated tests or code. You should be able to provide AI tools with the correct context, critically evaluate their output and ensure tests genuinely validate the intended behaviour.

Requirements

• Professional experience in software testing or Quality Engineering within a software development environment.
• Practical experience writing and maintaining automated tests.
• Experience with, or a strong willingness to develop expertise in, Playwright and TypeScript.
• Exposure to backend testing and an interest in working with PHP/Laravel feature and unit tests.
• Understanding of API testing, including validating responses, behaviour and edge cases.
• Ability to investigate, reproduce and troubleshoot technical issues.
• Comfortable working closely with Software Developers and understanding application code.
• Strong understanding of software testing principles, test design and defect management.
• Ability to understand complex business processes and translate them into effective test scenarios.
• Experience testing financial, accounting, payments or transactional systems would be advantageous.
• Basic coding ability, or a genuine interest in developing the skills required to implement smaller bug fixes and enhancements.
• Experience working within an Agile, cross-functional or shift-left development environment.
• Practical exposure to AI-assisted development or testing tools would be advantageous.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• High attention to detail and a strong sense of ownership and accountability.

What We’re Looking For

The ideal candidate is a curious, technically minded Quality Engineer who sees quality as a shared responsibility rather than the final step before software is released.

You should be comfortable getting involved early, asking questions, challenging assumptions and working directly with Developers to prevent issues before they occur.

You do not need to know every technology from day one. What matters is your ability to learn quickly, understand how systems work and continuously develop your technical capabilities. We are particularly interested in someone who wants to grow beyond traditional testing and become increasingly comfortable working with automation, application code and technical problem-solving.
