Western Digital is an American data storage company founded in 1970 that, since separating its flash memory business as SanDisk in early 2025, concentrates entirely on hard disk drives. Its drives are sold overwhelmingly to cloud and enterprise data centre operators rather than to consumers, and the company competes with Seagate in a market where areal density technologies such as shingled and heat-assisted recording determine cost per terabyte. Headquartered in San Jose and listed on Nasdaq, it has benefited from the sharp increase in storage demand created by artificial intelligence workloads.

WD is building the infrastructure behind the AI-driven data economy.

As AI scales, so does data. Every interaction, every model, every system generates data that must be stored, managed, and made accessible over time. That’s where we come in.

We combine deep engineering expertise with global-scale manufacturing to deliver the storage systems that make AI possible, powering hyperscale data centers, cloud platforms, and enterprise infrastructure worldwide.

This isn’t theoretical work. It’s real systems, at real scale, people solving some of the hardest challenges in technology today.

We’re looking for people who want to build, solve, and operate at that level.

Join us and let’s shape the future of data.

The Early Career Talent (ECT) - Engineering will join Western Digital's Head Backend Business Unit under the BEST Program, a structured 24-month development journey. This THO-based role is positioned at a higher technical level, reflecting the Master's degree requirement and the expectation of deeper engineering capability and independent research exposure.

The ECT will contribute to advanced process engineering, yield improvement, and technology development initiatives within slider processing and HGA assembly operations at the Thailand site (THO).

Reporting to the assigned Program Owner under Head Backend Operations, the ECT will work with senior engineers on substantive improvement projects, bring analytical rigor from graduate-level training, and be expected to contribute meaningfully from early in the program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Applying graduate-level engineering knowledge to manufacturing process analysis and improvement
  • Leading or co-leading small-scope technical projects in Phase 2 with mentor oversight
  • Contributing to data-driven yield and process capability studies
  • Preparing technical reports, process documentation/training modules, and project presentations
  • Actively participating in IDP reviews, milestone assessments, and cross-functional learning
  • Demonstrating technical leadership potential aligned with THO's engineering advancement roadmap

This position is part of our Early Career program at WD. Our Early Career program is designed to support individuals beginning their professional career by providing the foundational training through a structured onboarding, mentorship, and development curriculum.

REQUIRED:

We warmly welcome fresh graduates of a Master's degree, and Early Career Talent with 0-2 years of experience are encouraged to apply.

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Materials Science, Manufacturing Engineering, Physics, or equivalent experience
  • Fresh graduate or maximum 2 years of post-graduate work experience
  • Strong academic record with thesis or research project experience
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct technical analysis and present findings
  • Commitment to the full 24-month BEST Program

PREFERRED:

  • Research or thesis work related to manufacturing processes, materials, precision engineering, or automation
  • Academic or practical exposure to statistical process control, Design of Experiments (DOE), or process capability analysis
  • Publication, conference presentation, or award recognition (academic or technical)
  • Familiarity with HDD components, MEMS, thin-film technology, or precision assembly

SKILLS:

  • Advanced analytical and technical problem-solving capability
  • Experience with data analysis tools (Minitab, MATLAB, Python, or equivalent)
  • Strong written and verbal communication in English
  • Ability to independently manage a project workstream with guidance
  • High learning agility with a research and innovation mindset
  • Proficiency in MS Office and engineering documentation
