Westpac is an Australian banking and financial services group headquartered in Sydney, providing personal, business, corporate and institutional banking, home loans, cards, wealth and payment services across Australia and New Zealand. Founded in 1817 as the Bank of New South Wales, it is the oldest bank in Australia, is listed on the Australian Securities Exchange and also operates the St.George, Bank of Melbourne and BankSA brands. It hires software, mainframe, network and data engineers, information security consultants, business analysts, controls and monitoring managers, fraud and financial crime specialists, and transactional banking sales leaders.

Join our Fraud Prevention team and play a key role in helping protect our customers, our business and our reputation from fraud.

  • Grow your career in a supportive team where your work has real impact across Fraud Prevention.
  • Help shape and strengthen fraud detection strategies that protect customers and the bank from evolving fraud & scam threats.
  • Partner with industry experts and business stakeholders to influence how we detect and respond to emerging fraud risks.

What is the role?

As a Fraud Analyst, you'll support the wider Fraud Prevention business in managing fraud & scam by monitoring, implementing and recalibrating detection strategies that help mitigate ongoing risk and financial loss.

You'll play an important part of ensuring fraud controls are effective while minimising impacts on customer experience, product profitability and brand reputation.

Using data and analytics, you'll analyse and interrogate data to support fraud detection, identify emerging trends, implement and recalibrate detection scenarios, and develop meaningful insights into key trends and anomalies.

Your work will help strengthen our fraud detection capabilities, support informed decision making and responding to an ever-changing fraud & scam landscape.

What do I need:

You'll bring technical and analytical capabilities, using data to solve complex business problems. Pairing this with a strong mathematical background and real-world problem-solving skills, you will be interrogating large datasets to uncover insights, identify emerging fraud trends and recommend improvements to detection strategies.

You'll have experience translating data into meaningful actions and building strong working relationships with stakeholders across different teams.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify patterns, trends and anomalies.
  • High attention to detail and a continuous improvement mindset.
  • Experience with a programming language used to interrogate large data sets and/or fit statistical models such as SQL, SAS, Python, R.
  • Ability to engage with and communicate with a broad range of stakeholders.
  • Tertiary qualification in relevant disciplines such as Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science or Engineering is desirable.
  • A keen and curious mind, and a willingness to learn.
