Senior Data Engineer

Mō te tūranga | About the Role

The Senior Data Engineer is responsible for designing, developing and maintaining high quality data solutions, with a strong emphasis on Java engineering within the Data Platforms and AI team. This role leads the development of scalable, secure and high performing data platforms, leveraging Java and related technologies to support Westpac New Zealand’s innovative banking products and services. The Senior Data Engineer collaborates with cross functional teams to deliver robust data pipelines, streaming solutions and APIs, ensuring data is managed effectively and supports business decision making. By adopting agile, DevOps and cloud practices, this role drives continuous improvement and contributes to Westpac’s commitment to a customer centric, future focused organisation.

Nā tāu rourou | What will you bring?

• Strong hands-on experience with Snowflake, including developing, optimising, and operating modern cloud-based data warehouses.

• Practical experience with dbt (Data Build Tool) for data transformation, ELT development, and analytics engineering.
• Advanced Python development skills with proven experience building data solutions on modern cloud data platforms.
• Strong SQL development expertise, including query optimisation, performance tuning, troubleshooting, and complex data transformations.
• Experience using Apache Spark (PySpark/Spark SQL) for large-scale data processing and distributed computing.
• Proven experience designing, building, and maintaining scalable and reliable data pipelines.
• Experience building, scheduling, and orchestrating workflows using Apache Airflow.
• Strong understanding of data warehousing, data modelling, and modern data architecture principles.
• Experience developing and delivering cloud-based data solutions using Snowflake, dbt, Python, SQL, and Azure.
