SMT Process Engineer

This role is suited to an engineer who combines deep SMT manufacturing knowledge with a hands-on approach to process improvement. As Lead Engineer of SMT Manufacturing Line, you will play a central part in strengthening production readiness, supporting complex board builds, and helping ensure the line performs reliably from early manufacturability review through prototype and first-article execution.

This opportunity is perfect for a motivated dynamic professional who will be one of the first members of a newly established team for a brand new manufacturing process using cutting-edge technologies.

Responsibilities

• Review Gerber files and CAD data early to identify manufacturability issues.
• Use CAM software to translate design data into machine programs for stencil printers, pick-and-place machines, and AOI systems.
• Design custom thermal recipes for complex boards using reflow oven profiling tools.
• Optimize and fine-tune SMT line equipment including printers, pick-and-place machines, reflow ovens, and AOI systems.
• Use AOI yield data to trace upstream failures on the line.
• Read and react to real-time manufacturing metrics such as OEE, yield rates, and DPMO.
• Write work instructions, golden-sample profiles, and tooling requirements for handover to production.
• Split time between engineering office tasks and SMT floor support, including prototype builds and first-article monitoring.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation & Robotics, Manufacturing Engineering, or Industrial Engineering.
• 4+ years of experience in SMT manufacturing, including NPI, prototyping, or launch engineering.
• Strong understanding of the SMT process, including solder paste printing, pick-and-place optimization, and reviewing Gerber files and CAD data for manufacturability issues such as pad geometry or board-edge component placement.
• Proficiency with CAM software for translating design data into machine programs for stencil printers, pick-and-place machines, and AOI systems, along with experience using reflow oven profiling tools such as KIC or ECD.
• Knowledge of mechatronic systems across SMT equipment, including printers, pick-and-place machines, reflow ovens, and AOI.
• Ability to read and respond to real-time manufacturing metrics, including OEE, yield rates, and defect counts (DPMO).
• Familiarity with IPC-A-610 and J-STD-001.
• English proficiency at B2 (Upper-Intermediate) level for electronic manufacturing terminology.
• Eligibility to work in Bulgaria.
• Industry certifications such as IPC-A-610 or J-STD-001, or vendor-specific SMT equipment certifications such as ASM, Fuji, Panasonic, or Universal master technician certifications, are highly valued.
