JOB TITLE: Intern, Monitoring & Evaluation

TYPE OF CONTRACT: Internship

UNIT/DIVISION: Vulnerability Analysis & Mapping (VAM) and Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) Unit

DUTY STATION (City, Country): Bridgetown, Barbados

DURATION: 6 months (full time)

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:

In 2018, WFP re-established its presence in the Caribbean with an office in Barbados. The WFP Caribbean Multi-Country Office (MCO) supports 22 countries and territories across the English and Dutch-speaking Caribbean. WFP Caribbean's capacity strengthening programme focuses on vulnerability analysis and mapping, end-to-end supply chain management, shock-responsive social protection, food systems strengthening, and climate risk financing. During emergencies, WFP supports governments and partners by providing food, cash or voucher assistance, emergency logistics, and emergency telecommunications services when national and regional capacities are exceeded.

The Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Intern will support the Vulnerability Analysis and Mapping (VAM) and M&E Unit in strengthening evidence-based decision-making, accountability, learning, and programme effectiveness across the Caribbean MCO. Working under the guidance of the VAM and M&E team, the intern will contribute to monitoring, reporting, data management, documentation, and knowledge management activities that support programme implementation and strategic decision making. As an entry-level learning opportunity, the internship will provide practical exposure to monitoring and evaluation systems, data analysis, results reporting, and organizational learning processes. The intern will work under close supervision, assuming progressively greater responsibility as skills and experience develop throughout the assignment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (not all-inclusive, nor exhaustive):

As part of the WFP VAM & M&E Team, you will:

• Support the compilation, cleaning and organization of monitoring and evaluation data from programme activities, assessments, surveys and other data collection exercises.
• Assist in maintaining information records, monitoring trackers, databases, documentation repositories and other tools used to track programme outputs, outcomes and follow-up actions.
• Assist in preparing tables, charts, dashboards and other simple data visualization products to support internal reporting and programme decision-making.
• Contribute to the drafting and formatting of monitoring reports, presentations, factsheets, briefing notes and learning products under the guidance of the supervisor.
• Support the preparation of monitoring activities, assessments, surveys, reviews and evaluations, including by assisting with tools, questionnaires, interview guides, data collection plans and note-taking.
• Assist with the organization and archiving of monitoring tools, standard operating procedures, guidance notes, survey instruments and related M&E documentation.
• Support desk reviews, background research and literature reviews related to monitoring, evaluation, food security, social protection, climate resilience, disaster risk management and programme performance.
• Assist in documenting lessons learned, good practices, success stories and evidence generated from WFP Caribbean programmes and activities.
• Support the organization of workshops, trainings, meetings and learning events, including preparation of materials, participant lists, minutes and follow-up trackers.
• Contribute to the tracking of recommendations and follow-up actions arising from monitoring exercises, reviews and evaluations.
• Support the integration of gender, protection, accountability to affected populations, disability inclusion and other cross-cutting considerations into assigned monitoring and reporting tasks.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

• Gain understanding of logical frameworks, indicators and their applications in monitoring programme progress and success.
• Cultivate effective communication skills and professionalism essential for workplace interactions and success.
• Enhance problem-solving and critical thinking abilities and contribute to process improvements.

DESIRED EXPERIENCES FOR ENTRY INTO THE ROLE:

• Has demonstrated interest in monitoring and evaluation, research, data analysis, programme management, food security, social protection, climate resilience, disaster risk management or international development.
• Has experience through coursework, research projects, volunteer work or internships involving data collection, data analysis, reporting, literature reviews or knowledge management.
• Has general familiarity with Microsoft Excel and interest in learning digital data collection, visualization or analytical tools such as KoboToolbox, ODK, Power BI, Tableau or GIS software.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Eligibility:

a. Be currently enrolled in an undergraduate programme degree for (example, undergraduate programme) from a recognised university and have completed at least two years of the programme Candidates should have attended classes in the past 12 months;

b. Be currently enrolled in a graduate programme (for example, Master degree) from a recognised university and have attended classes in the past 12 months;

c. Be a recent graduate from an undergraduate or graduate programme (within six months prior to the application to the internship programme) from a recognised university and have attended classes in the last 12 months of enrolment in the university.

d. Be fluent in English. Fluency in other WFP official and working languages is always an asset but not required.

e. Be available to work full time for a period of 6 months in the WFP Caribbean office.

f. Not be sons, daughters, brothers or sisters of WFP employees;

The Programme will recognise candidates' educational credentials from institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education;

Experience:

No professional work experience is required. Relevant academic, volunteer, research or internship experience in data analysis, monitoring, research, reporting or programme support is desirable.

Knowledge & Skills:

• You will use solid theoretical knowledge of research methodologies for data collection and analysis.
• You have excellent interpersonal skills; you are sensible and respectful of diversity.
• You are committed to your own learning and development.
• You are technologically savvy and proficient in MS Office and similar.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

• The Intern receives a monthly stipend from WFP which is the equivalent of US$1000.
• The intern will have Medical Insurance coverage for the duration of the internship, fully paid by WFP.
• WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas and related costs.
• The internship is on a full-time basis in accordance with the working schedule of the WFP Caribbean Multi-Country Office.
