We’re bridging two worlds, moving towards more sustainable energy sources, while helping to provide the energy, chemicals and resources needed now.

Purpose

As a Senior Process Safety Engineer, you will provide advanced technical expertise and leadership in process safety and fire protection engineering in support of Worley and its clients. This role is responsible for the high-quality delivery of process safety and fire protection studies and design input across medium to large projects, while supporting the development and application of Worley standards, methodologies, and best practices.

The Senior Process Safety Engineer plays a key role in safeguarding people, assets, the environment, and business continuity by embedding sound risk-based decision making throughout the project lifecycle. This position is typically based in Calgary or Edmonton and supports projects across the energy, chemicals, mining, and energy transition sectors.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Delivery & Engineering Excellence

  • Provide technical leadership and hands-on delivery for core process safety and fire protection activities, including:

  • Hazard identification and risk assessment (HAZID, HAZOP, What-If, Bowtie)

  • Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA)

  • Safety Integrity Level (SIL) studies and lifecycle support

  • Qualitative and quantitative risk assessment and consequence modelling (fire, explosion, toxic dispersion)

  • Facility siting and layout risk assessments

  • Inherently safer design reviews

  • Process Safety Management (PSM) frameworks and major accident hazard management

  • Development of fire protection philosophies and design basis documentation

  • Fire and gas detection philosophies, system architecture, and coverage strategies

  • Firewater system philosophies, hydraulic analysis input, and network design support

  • Fixed fire suppression system philosophies (foam, deluge, water spray, clean agent, inert gas, CO₂where applicable)

  • Passive fire protection requirements and fire ratings

  • Ensure process safety and fire protection requirements are fully integrated with process, mechanical, piping, electrical, and I&C design to achieve ALARP risk outcomes and fit-for-purpose life safety solutions.

Project Execution & Client Support

  • Act as a senior technical contributor on projects, providing discipline input from concept through detailed engineering, construction support, and commissioning.

  • Support the development of project-specific process safety and fire protection philosophies and execution strategies.

  • Participate in and facilitate client and internal workshops and technical reviews (e.g., HAZOPs, SIL studies, QRA reviews, fire protection design reviews).

  • Provide technical support for Management of Change (MOC), technical queries, and deviations during project execution.

  • Support proposals, bids, and pursuits through technical input, work scope definition, and execution planning.

  • Interface directly with clients to provide credible, practical, and risk-informed process safety and fire protection advice.

Technical Assurance & Continuous Improvement

  • Review and check process safety and fire protection deliverables to ensure compliance with Worley standards, applicable codes, regulatory requirements, and client specifications.

  • Contribute to the development, maintenance, and continuous improvement of Worley technical standards, guidelines, tools, and work processes related to process safety and fire protection.

  • Support discipline leadership in identifying technical improvement opportunities, lessons learned, and best practices.

Capability Development & Mentorship

  • Provide day-to-day technical guidance and mentoring to Intermediate and Junior Process Safety / Fire Protection Engineers.

  • Support the development of discipline capability through knowledge sharing, technical coaching, and participation in internal communities of practice.

  • Contribute to technical training initiatives and capability-building activities within the discipline.

Qualifications & Experience

Required

  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registered with APEGA (or eligible for registration).

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Chemical preferred; Fire Protection, Mechanical, or equivalent considered).

  • Significant experience in process safety and/or fire protection engineering within an EPC/EPCM and/or owner/operator environment.

  • Demonstrated experience delivering process safety studies and fire protection input on medium to large, multi-discipline projects.

  • Strong working knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and regulatory frameworks (e.g., NFPA, API, CSA, and local AHJ requirements).

  • Proven ability to work independently, interface with clients, and contribute effectively within multidisciplinary project teams.

Preferred

  • Experience across multiple sectors (oil & gas, chemicals, mining, energy transition).

  • Experience supporting large capital projects or portfolios of work.

  • Formal training in HAZOP leadership, SIL studies, QRA, and/or fire protection engineering.

  • Exposure to global project delivery models and workshare environments.
