Formerly the animal health business of Pfizer, it became an independent company listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 2013 and runs manufacturing sites such as its pharmaceutical plant in Lincoln, Nebraska, and its operations in Kalamazoo, Michigan. It hires aseptic, packaging and maintenance technicians, automation engineers, supply chain planners, veterinary and diagnostics specialists, data analysts and finance staff.

As a Lab Metrology Engineer, you will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy, precision, and reliability of measurement equipment and processes within the laboratory environment. You will play a crucial role in maintaining and calibrating various types of equipment to guarantee the quality and consistency of experimental data. This position requires meticulous attention to detail, strong analytical skills, and a solid understanding of measurement principles and techniques. The role also supports laboratory operations in a cGxP (current Good x Practice) environment; therefore, the ability to operate in and maintain compliance is critical. The role also involves reviewing and approving the calibration and documentation work of others, using a validated Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), and may provide guidance and direction to calibration vendors and contract staff, as required.

Position Responsibilities

  • Perform calibration, verification, and validation of laboratory instruments, environmental monitoring systems (EMS using REES systems), and equipment according to established procedures and standards. Hands-on experience with the installation, commissioning, and implementation of REES nodes, temperature probes, and CO₂ sensors is preferred.
  • Maintain calibration schedules and records for all laboratory equipment, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Review and approve the calibration work of teammates and vendors.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose issues with measurement equipment, performing necessary repairs or coordinating with external vendors for servicing.
  • Develop and implement procedures for the proper handling, storage, and usage of measurement standards and reference materials.
  • Participate in the selection and procurement of new metrology equipment, evaluating technical specifications and suitability for laboratory applications.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in the computerized maintenance management system (SAP enterprise resource planning tool), including day-to-day use, adding and removing assets from the system, work order lifecycle oversight, and troubleshooting.
  • Provide managers and related groups with visibility into upcoming and pending work, metrics, and workload/workforce assessments.

Education and Technical Skills Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Physics, Metrology, Engineering, or an appropriate technical discipline, or comparable advanced metrology/calibration training and certifications.
  • Strong knowledge of measurement principles, statistical analysis, and calibration techniques.
  • Strong understanding of the common instruments and measuring devices used in a research organization, including EMS (REES points), balances, mechanical/digital pipettes, multimeters, digital thermometers, and optical instruments.
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to accurately and reliably work with large sets of numerical data.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to learn new tasks and new systems.
  • Strong desire and commitment to providing excellent support to scientific and laboratory operations personnel and other internal team members.
  • Excellent communication skills to interact with internal teams and external vendors.
  • Ability to understand and consistently follow safety protocols and standard operating procedures.
  • Ability to travel up to 5% of the time.
  • Ability to lift equipment up to 50 lbs.

Desired Qualifications

  • Familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) such as SAP.
  • Familiarity with metrology standards and regulations such as ISO 17025, ISO 9001, and ANSI/NCSL Z540.
  • Knowledge of Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs), especially with respect to laboratory equipment maintenance documentation requirements.
