Overview

Character.AI is an American company founded in 2021 by former Google researchers that operates a platform for creating and talking to personality-driven AI characters. Users build characters with a description, greeting and example dialogue, then share them publicly, and the service has grown into one of the most used consumer AI products by session time. Headquartered in Redwood City, California, the company runs its own dialogue-tuned models and has added voice calls, animated avatars and multi-character scenes, alongside age assurance and safety controls for younger users.
