Independent Policing Oversight Authority

Headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) is a statutory oversight body established under the Independent Policing Oversight Authority Act of 2011 to provide independent civilian oversight of the National Police Service (NPS). The authority is mandated to investigate allegations of police misconduct - including deaths and serious injuries resulting from police actions - inspect police premises and detention facilities, and monitor law enforcement operations to safeguard civil liberties and the rule of law. Operating nationwide through its central headquarters and regional offices, IPOA submits investigative findings and prosecutorial recommendations to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to enhance transparency, accountability, and public trust across Kenya's policing system.
