The Society of General Internal Medicine is a professional association of academic general internists based in Alexandria, Virginia, dedicated to medical education, research, clinical practice and advocacy aimed at better health care for adults. Founded in 1978 as the Society for Research and Education in Primary Care Internal Medicine and renamed in 1988, it has more than 3,300 members, publishes the Journal of General Internal Medicine and the SGIM Forum, and runs annual and regional meetings and the ACLGIM leadership programs. Its staff supports membership, meetings, publications, career development courses, mentoring, grants and awards, and federal policy and advocacy work.
