Upstart is an American lending platform founded in 2012 by former Google employees that underwrites consumer loans using machine learning on far more variables than a traditional credit score considers. Its models draw on education, employment and behavioural data to approve more borrowers at a given loss rate, covering personal loans, auto refinancing and home equity lines. Listed on Nasdaq, it originates loans mostly through partner banks and credit unions and sells them to institutional investors rather than lending from its own balance sheet. The company is headquartered in San Carlos, California, United States.
