Lead Site Reliability Engineer - Ceph Storage

GoDaddy's Global Storage Engineering team operates one of the largest Ceph environments in the world, delivering the object, block, and file storage platforms that power GoDaddy's hosting infrastructure, internal services, OpenStack environments, and next-generation AI/HPC workloads. Ceph is a strategic platform at GoDaddy - not an ancillary service. Our global footprint includes 80+ production clusters, 20,000+ OSDs, 1,830 storage nodes, 300 PB of raw capacity, and 69 billion objects spanning five datacenters across three continents. The platform supports RBD, RGW (S3/Swift), and CephFS workloads through more than 1,550 pools, 574,000 placement groups, and 900+ MDS daemons, creating engineering challenges that demand deep expertise in storage architecture, data durability, performance optimization, automation, and observability. 

As a Lead Senior Site Reliability Engineer, you'll serve as one of the principal technical leaders for GoDaddy's Ceph platform. You'll design the next generation of storage clusters, lead major platform upgrades, drive capacity and hardware strategy, and establish the standards that govern how the platform scales. You'll be the engineer the team turns to for the most complex storage challenges, helping shape multi-quarter architectural direction while mentoring other engineers in advanced Ceph design and operations. This role is ideal for a seasoned storage engineer who wants to influence the future of a globally distributed storage platform serving millions of customers. 

What You'll Get to Do  

• Design and architect large-scale production Ceph clusters, including CRUSH topology, failure-domain modeling, replication and erasure-coding strategies, storage hardware selection, and data placement architecture. 
• Lead fleet-wide capacity planning, performance modeling, and hardware qualification across 80+ production clusters comprising 20,000+ OSDs and 300 PB of raw storage. 
• Own major platform upgrades and migration initiatives, including Ceph releases, OpenStack integrations, and large-scale storage modernization efforts. 
• Drive resolution of the most complex cross-functional production incidents spanning storage, networking, virtualization, and compute systems. 
• Establish automation, operational standards, and reliability practices that improve platform scalability, reduce toil, and increase engineering efficiency across the storage organization. 

Your Experience Should Include  

• 7+ years designing, operating, and scaling distributed storage platforms, including deep hands-on ownership of production Ceph environments. 
• Expert-level Ceph knowledge including CRUSH maps, placement groups, OSD architecture, MON/MGR/MDS subsystems, RGW, CephFS, RBD, replication, and erasure coding. 
• Proven experience designing storage architectures and performing capacity planning, durability analysis, performance optimization, and failure-domain modeling at scale. 
• Experience leading major storage platform upgrades, migrations, and modernization programs from planning through production execution. 
• Strong automation and software engineering skills using Python and/or Go, combined with Infrastructure-as-Code and orchestration frameworks such as Terraform, SaltStack, and Ansible. 

You Might Also Have  

• Deep expertise with advanced Ceph technologies including RGW Multisite, RBD Mirroring, CephFS at scale, BlueStore tuning, and erasure-coding optimization. 
• OpenStack storage architecture experience including Cinder, Swift, Manila, Nova, and Neutron integrations with Ceph. 
• Kubernetes storage expertise involving CSI drivers, stateful workloads, StorageClasses, and Rook-based Ceph deployments. 
• Experience evaluating and integrating large-scale storage technologies such as NetApp, Isilon, Pure, VAST, Weka, DDN, and AI/HPC storage platforms. 
• Contributions to the Ceph community through upstream development, code reviews, bug fixes, architecture discussions, or open-source storage initiatives.

Compensation:  

The estimated pay ranges for this role are listed below. In addition to base pay, this role may be eligible for other forms of compensation, which may include a corporate bonus and/or equity awards, subject to the terms of applicable plans and individual eligibility.

Bay Area (Santa Clara, San Francisco) and Los Angeles:

$154,000—$231,000 USD

Austin, D.C. Metro, CA (non-Bay Area), HI, IL, MA, NH, OR, VA, WA:

$133,000—$199,000 USD

New York City Metro, Kirkland/Seattle:

$140,800—$211,200 USD

All other US locations not previously listed:

$118,500—$177,500 USD
