Amazon is an American technology and retail conglomerate founded by Jeff Bezos in 1994 as an online bookstore and headquartered in Seattle, Washington. It operates the world's largest online marketplace together with a global logistics network, physical grocery stores and a third-party seller platform that accounts for most units sold. Amazon Web Services, launched in 2006, is the leading public cloud provider and generates the majority of the group's operating profit, while advertising, Prime Video, Alexa devices and Kuiper satellite broadband round out the business.

Amazon's network is a key differentiator for Amazon Cloud Computing and Web Services (AWS), enabling the global operation of thousands of applications across hundreds of thousands of servers worldwide. Our AWS networking teams develop and operate the network platform for all of Amazon, including e-commerce products and cloud computing solutions. This platform is industry-leading for its efficiency, throughput, and reliability -- making it critical to the success of hundreds of thousands of AWS customers.

We are looking for a Senior Network Development Manager (NDM) to join our team, serving large customers with unique requirements. This opportunity will have you lead the design, operation, scaling, and expansion of the network, software, and systems that support AWS Regions. This infrastructure is dedicated to the enterprise and mission needs of partners across federal and civilian agencies, research and development centers, and private industry. It combines innovation in cloud computing with dedicated infrastructure that provides customers and partners with the scale and speed needed to move from data collection to decisions and action.

As a Senior NDM, you will be hiring, managing, and developing multiple teams of network and systems engineers. You will be responsible for the end-to-end operational health of the network including capacity management and forecasting, scaling and expansion, change control, and continuous improvement through new software automation, tools, and systems. You will lead the operations and evolution of a network that is software driven, highly automated, and operating at an unmatched global scale. You will also represent the networking team to our customers, ensuring we meet their needs for innovation, delivery and safe operations.

At Amazon, we ask our technical leaders to be great engineers who can dive deep and get involved in helping their engineers make good decisions and deliver quality solutions. They should maintain a good level of technical understanding and be able to ensure the right engineering expertise exists within the team. In addition, our leaders are thoughtful managers who support and mentor their team and create a friendly working environment of mutual trust and respect.

This is a high visibility and high impact role.

To be considered for this role you must be a UK national.

Key job responsibilities

The person in this role will be responsible for:

- Managing software and network issues to drive down availability risks, while ensuring they are addressed long-term through effective solutions that prevent a recurrence.

- Identifying and implementing innovation opportunities that improve the security, availability, scalability, performance, agility and cost efficiency of the network.

- Working closely with customers and internal partners to develop, communicate, and deliver technology roadmaps that invent new network and software solutions.

- Ensuring that the design, management, implementation, and deployments are sound and executed at scale, safely keeping AWS ahead of customers' demand.

- Representing networking to our customers, senior leadership, and internal service/infrastructure teams, to ensure that network dependencies and deliverables are identified and delivered as needed.

- Ensuring best practices from AWS are adopted, and that we are always compliant with security requirements.

- Building a world class team by attracting, developing, and retaining industry leading talent. This includes technical and soft skills mentoring, career and growth management, 1:1s, training, and day-to-day oversight.

- You must be a UK national and able to obtain and maintain a UK Government Security Clearance. Further details found here: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/united-kingdom-security-vetting-clearance-levels

Our mission is to make the network completely invisible to anyone using it. We do this by delivering capacity ahead of demand, maximizing security and availability, building extensible solutions that are easy to use, and resolving faults before anyone can notice.

A day in the life includes tactical event response, project management, developing and aligning leaders on new strategies, inspecting metrics to find new ways to further automate the network, and managing a talented team of builders across network, systems, and scaling disciplines.
