The Sable organization bridges the gap between the storage technologies offered by AWS and the features required to power Amazon's SDO (Stores, Digital, and Others) organization. Our primary offering, Sable, stores over 30 petabytes of critical Amazon data powering the Items and Offers Pipeline, Shopping Cart, Checkout, Retail & Digital Ordering, Transportation Systems, and Fulfillment Systems. Sable serves over 150 million requests per second at sub-millisecond latency, and is mission-critical for Amazon's SDO: when it is unavailable, customer-facing experiences and core business operations are directly impacted.
The Sable Data Plane team is part of the Sable organization and focused on two key areas: the Sable Data Node and Disaster Recovery. We are a tier-1 team operating some of the most critical storage infrastructure at Amazon, where correctness, durability, and availability are non-negotiable.
We are looking for a Software Development Engineer II to take full end-to-end ownership of Sable feature delivery and operational improvements. You will independently drive design, implementation, and rollout of changes to a tier-1 system - advancing the platform without disrupting production traffic serving Amazon's most critical commerce flows.
This is a role for an engineer who is energized by hard distributed-systems problems and who takes genuine pride in operational reality: not just shipping good software, but ensuring that software holds up under the demands of a 30+ PB, mission-critical platform.
Key job responsibilities
- Work on deep, interesting storage problems at scale - anti-entropy, leader election, disaster recovery, caching, replication, and data durability - strengthening the correctness and resilience of the Sable Data Node and its recovery paths.
- Take end-to-end ownership of Sable features and operational improvements - driving design, implementation, and safe rollout independently, without impacting production traffic.
- Carry on-call responsibilities for tier-1 services, acting as an active contributor during high-severity operational incidents and driving mitigation and resolution with urgency.
- Conduct Root Cause Analysis for high-severity incidents and author operational runbooks.
- When incidents reveal that Sable customers are not following best practices, advocate directly to those customers to adopt Sable's recommended patterns and configurations, preventing recurrence.
- Proactively identify and advocate for opportunities to improve operational excellence across the platform.
- Identify and make improvements to the team's development and testing practices, raising engineering quality.
- Mentor junior engineers and interns, helping to raise the overall bar of the team.
Basic qualifications
- 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- 1+ years of software development engineer or related occupational experience
- 1+ years of designing and developing large-scale, multi-tiered, multi-threaded, embedded or distributed software applications, tools, systems, and services using: C#, C++, Java, or Perl experience
- 1+ years of Object Oriented Design experience
- Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
- Experience programming with at least one software programming language
Preferred qualifications
- 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
