AMD

AMD is an American semiconductor company founded in 1969 and headquartered in Santa Clara, California, that designs processors, graphics chips and adaptive computing hardware without owning fabrication plants. Its Ryzen and Threadripper processors and Radeon graphics serve consumers and creators, EPYC server chips have taken a large share of the data centre market from Intel, and the Instinct accelerators compete for AI training and inference workloads. The 2022 acquisition of Xilinx added field-programmable gate arrays and adaptive systems on chip, and the company also supplies the custom silicon inside the PlayStation and Xbox consoles.

THE ROLE:

AMD's Software and Solutions Team is seeking a Solution Engineering technical leader to accelerate the integration and adoption of AMD technology across the open software ecosystem. This role will define and deliver production-oriented solutions that connect AMD CPUs, GPUs, DPUs, networking, memory, and software platforms with the operating systems, databases, runtimes, APIs, developer frameworks, and cloud-native services customers use to build and operate modern infrastructure.

The role will bridge AMD architecture and the broader open ecosystem by creating reference architectures, upstream integrations, reusable software components, validated deployment patterns, and early customer proof-of-concepts. Primary focus areas include Linux and other operating-system kernels, runtime and system services, database and data-platform enablement, API layers, Model Context Protocol (MCP) integrations, container and orchestration environments, observability, security, and performance engineering.

Working across AMD + AMD (A+A) and AMD + NVIDIA (A+N) environments and leveraging ROCm™, AMD Zen Software Studio, AMD Enterprise AI, open-source projects, industry standards, and upstream communities, this leader will make AMD platforms easier to adopt, integrate, operate, and optimize. AI is one supported workload domain-particularly inference, retrieval, developer tooling, and data-intensive services-but the role is fundamentally centered on open systems integration and solution engineering.

As a recognized technical authority, this individual will collaborate with silicon architecture, product engineering, software organizations, customers, hyperscalers, ISVs, standards bodies, and open-source communities. The role will influence AMD hardware and software roadmaps through implementation evidence, workload analysis, ecosystem gaps, customer requirements, and measurable improvements in compatibility, performance, scalability, security, manageability, and developer experience.

This is a highly technical, hands-on individual contributor role focused on architecture, integration, implementation, performance engineering, and ecosystem leadership. It is not a people management, program management, or alliance management position.

THE PERSON:

A deeply technical solution engineer and systems architect with broad expertise across operating systems, kernel and driver interfaces, runtime services, databases, distributed systems, APIs, cloud-native infrastructure, heterogeneous computing, networking, storage, virtualization, security, and performance engineering. This individual has a record of turning platform capabilities into integrated, supportable solutions that customers and open-source communities can deploy at scale.

The ideal candidate understands how applications move through API, middleware, runtime, kernel, driver, firmware, and hardware layers, and how data moves across transactional databases, analytical platforms, caches, object stores, and retrieval systems. They can diagnose integration barriers, contribute production-quality code, shape stable interfaces, and optimize end-to-end behavior across AMD and third-party components. Familiarity with practical AI infrastructure, model serving, vector search, and MCP-enabled tools is valuable where these technologies intersect with broader platform solutions.

This individual thrives in customer-facing and community-facing environments where long-term technical direction must be grounded in working code, benchmarks, upstream collaboration, and repeatable deployment outcomes. They lead through technical excellence and influence while partnering across engineering organizations and engaging directly with strategic customers, cloud providers, OEMs, ISVs, database vendors, operating-system communities, and standards organizations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Define and execute AMD's solution engineering strategy for integrating AMD hardware and software into open-source, commercial, enterprise, cloud, and edge ecosystems, creating end-to-end reference architectures, reusable components, integration guides, validated configurations, and customer proof-of-concepts spanning AMD CPUs, GPUs, DPUs, networking, memory, storage, and accelerators.
  • Drive enablement and upstream collaboration across Linux kernels, device drivers, firmware interfaces, system libraries, package ecosystems, container runtimes, Kubernetes, schedulers, service meshes, and observability platforms, and optimize runtime services-including language runtimes, compilers, libraries, inference and data-processing frameworks, communication stacks, and background system services-for AMD architectures.
  • Integrate and optimize relational, NoSQL, analytical, vector, graph, and distributed database platforms on AMD systems, addressing query execution, concurrency, memory hierarchy, storage I/O, networking, resiliency, and scale-out performance.
  • Design stable, secure, high-performance APIs and SDK integration patterns that expose AMD platform capabilities while simplifying application portability and developer adoption, and develop MCP servers, connectors, and reference patterns where MCP provides a practical interface between developer tools, enterprise data, platform services, and selected AI-assisted workflows.
  • Support both AMD + AMD (A+A) and AMD + NVIDIA (A+N) deployment models, improving interoperability, workload portability, operational consistency, and customer choice.
  • Apply rigorous profiling, benchmarking, tracing, and systems analysis to improve latency, throughput, scalability, availability, energy efficiency, total cost of ownership, and quality of service.
  • Build security into solution architectures through confidential computing, trusted execution, attestation, identity, secure boot, software supply-chain controls, cryptography, data protection, governance, and auditability.
  • Enable practical AI workloads where relevant, including model serving, retrieval, vector search, data pipelines, and developer productivity, without making AI the sole focus of the platform solution.
  • Partner directly with strategic customers, hyperscalers, OEMs, ISVs, database and platform vendors, and open-source maintainers to resolve integration barriers and validate production readiness, translating implementation findings and ecosystem requirements into actionable feedback for AMD silicon, firmware, compiler, operating-system, runtime, library, and product roadmaps.
  • Represent AMD through technical publications, conferences, standards bodies, upstream contributions, architecture reviews, and executive customer engagements, and mentor senior engineers and architects in systems integration, open-source engagement, performance engineering, and production solution design.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Extensive experience delivering systems software, platform integration, solution architecture, or customer engineering for large-scale enterprise, cloud, data-center, or edge environments, with deep expertise in heterogeneous computing across CPUs, GPUs, DPUs, networking, storage, memory subsystems, virtualization, and cloud infrastructure.
  • Strong knowledge of Linux kernel architecture, drivers, system calls, memory management, I/O, networking stacks, security mechanisms, performance tooling, and upstream development practices, plus hands-on experience with runtime services, compilers, language runtimes, system libraries, containers, Kubernetes, distributed schedulers, observability, CI/CD, and software supply chains.
  • Strong database and data-platform expertise spanning relational, NoSQL, analytical, vector, graph, caching, messaging, and distributed storage technologies, including performance and scale-out optimization.
  • Experience designing and integrating REST, gRPC, event-driven, and systems-level APIs, with attention to compatibility, security, observability, versioning, and developer experience, along with working knowledge of Model Context Protocol (MCP), including server, client, tool, resource, authentication, and enterprise integration patterns.
  • Strong programming skills in C, C++, Python, Go, Rust, or comparable systems languages, with comfort in performance-critical paths, profiling, debugging, and production-quality open-source development.
  • Experience with ROCm™, AMD Zen Software Studio, AMD Enterprise AI, or comparable accelerator, compiler, runtime, and developer-tool ecosystems is desirable; practical familiarity with AI infrastructure, model serving, retrieval-augmented applications, vector databases, and inference performance is beneficial, but broad systems integration depth is more important than specialization in AI.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership with customers, hyperscalers, OEMs, ISVs, standards groups, and open-source communities, supported by shipped solutions, upstream contributions, patents, publications, or conference presentations.

ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline; equivalent advanced industry experience may be considered.

ALTERNATE LOCATION:

  • Austin, TX
