Staff Engineer

About the Role :

We are looking for a Staff Backend Engineer to drive the design and development of highly scalable, reliable, and high-performance backend systems. As a Staff Engineer, you will work on complex technical problems, influence architecture and engineering practices, and collaborate closely with engineering, product, and other cross-functional teams. This role requires strong hands-on engineering capabilities along with the ability to provide technical direction across teams.

Responsibilities :

- Design, build, and own scalable, reliable, and high-performance backend services and systems.

- Drive architecture and technical design decisions for complex, large-scale systems.

- Solve challenging problems related to scalability, reliability, performance, distributed systems, and data consistency.

- Lead the development of critical backend components from design through deployment and production ownership.

- Establish and promote engineering best practices around code quality, testing, observability, reliability, and performance.

- Identify technical bottlenecks and drive initiatives to improve system performance, availability, and developer productivity.

- Work closely with Product, Engineering, and other stakeholders to translate business requirements into robust technical solutions.

- Provide technical mentorship and guidance to senior engineers and engineering teams.

- Conduct and contribute to design and code reviews, ensuring high engineering standards.

- Influence technical roadmaps and contribute to long-term architecture and platform strategy.

- Take ownership of ambiguous, cross-team technical challenges and drive them towards resolution.

Requirements :

- 10+ years of experience in backend/software engineering.

- Strong hands-on expertise in at least one of the following : Java, Golang, Python.

- Strong understanding of Data Structures and Algorithms, Object-Oriented Design, and System Design.

- Proven experience designing and building distributed, scalable, and fault-tolerant systems.

- Strong understanding of microservices, APIs, databases, caching, messaging systems, and cloud-native architectures.

- Experience working with systems handling high scale, traffic, data volume, or complex business workflows.

- Strong understanding of performance optimisation, observability, reliability, and production engineering.

- Ability to make sound architectural decisions while balancing scalability, reliability, complexity, and business requirements.

- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence technical decisions across teams.

- Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers and raise the overall engineering bar.

Good to Have :

- Experience working in a high-growth product or technology company.

- Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.

- Experience with Kubernetes, Docker, CI/CD, and modern DevOps practices.

- Experience with distributed databases, Kafka or other messaging systems.

- Experience driving large-scale technical migrations or platform modernisation initiatives.

- Contributions to engineering standards, architecture frameworks, or developer productivity initiatives.
