Claranet is a London managed services provider founded in 1996 that runs cloud, network and cybersecurity for mid-sized organisations. It operates data centres and support operations across Europe and Brazil after a long series of acquisitions. The company helps customers migrate and operate workloads on hyperscale platforms as well as its own infrastructure.

Position Summary

The Infrastructure Engineer (L4) is the Hosting team's subject matter expert for VMware NSX-T and platform networking, and a well-rounded engineer across the wider VMware private cloud stack. The role owns NSX-T design standards, escalation and capability uplift within the team, while contributing to the day-to-day engineering and operation of the full private cloud estate — vSphere, vSAN, VCF, backup and disaster recovery — for customers with demanding availability and recovery expectations.

Role Mission

Claranet’s strategy is to build long term, trusted relationships with customers by delivering secure, resilient, and high quality managed services. The Senior Infrastructure Engineer underpins this mission by ensuring critical infrastructure services are engineered, operated, and evolved to meet stringent regulatory, availability, and recovery expectations.

Essential Roles & Responsibilities

Infrastructure Engineering

  • Design, implement, and support complex infrastructure solutions across on-premises, private cloud (VMware) environments including VMware NSX-T
  • Lead planning, execution and disaster recovery activities from a VMware platform and networking perspective.
  • Ensure infrastructure services are available, performant, and operating as designed
  • Support the team to operate enterprise-grade backup, recovery, and data protection solutions, ensuring alignment with RPO/RTO requirements

Senior Technical Leadership

  • Act as the recognised NSX-T authority within the Hosting team
  • Own NSX-T design standards, reference architectures, patterns and build documentation
  • Deliver structured knowledge transfer, training and mentoring to raise NSX-T capability across the team, reducing single-person dependency
  • Represent platform networking in design authority, change advisory and architecture forums
  • Own the NSX-T upgrade and lifecycle roadmap across the estate
  • Lead root cause analysis for major incidents

Financial Services & Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure infrastructure and backup services comply with financial services regulations and frameworks (e.g. FCA, PRA, DORA, ISO 27001, SOC)
  • Design and operate solutions that support operational resilience, business continuity, and disaster recovery
  • Support regulatory audits, customer assurance activities, and risk assessments

Position Specifications

Behavioural Competencies – Organisational & Behavioural Fit

  • Senior technical presence with confidence and gravitas
  • Calm, methodical, and decisive under pressure
  • Strong sense of ownership and accountability
  • Excellent communicator with technical and non-technical audiences

Critical Competencies – Technical Fit

Essential:

  • Proven experience as a senior infrastructure engineer supporting VMware mission-critical environments
  • Deep, hands-on experience designing, implementing and operating VMware NSX-T / NSX 4.x in production, including Tier-0 and Tier-1 gateways, edge nodes and edge clusters, segments and overlay/VLAN transport zones, and NSX Manager lifecycle and upgrades
  • Distributed Firewall and micro-segmentation policy design, plus gateway firewalling and NAT
  • Dynamic routing and peering between NSX and physical fabric (BGP, ECMP, VRF), and NSX load balancing / IPsec & L2 VPN
  • Troubleshooting overlay networking end to end (Geneve/TEP, MTU, uplink profiles, traceflow, packet capture)
  • Strong understanding of operational resilience, DR, and business continuity requirements

Shift & Working Pattern:

  • Standard business hours, with participation in an on call rota (1 in 4, compensated)
